  Welcome to the 97th Infantry Division
The mission of the 97th Infantry Division was to cross the Sieg River in coordination with the other infantry divisions of the XVIII Corps and attack north towards Dusseldorf.
The 97th Infantry Division on the left and the 86th on the right maintained their defensive positions as the veteran 8th and 78th divisions crossed the river in assault boats and established positions on the northern bank.
Division artillery was given the responsibility for handling the large number of prisoners who were beginning to clog the roads.

In January 1944, the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, which was temporarily detached from the Division to fight at Anzio, earned the nickname "Devils in Baggy Pants." The nickname was taken from an entry made in a German officer's diary.
The division was moved up to the front by motor transport and reinforced by the 34th Infantry Division on 12 July 1943.
The Division attacked the Elbe River on 30 April in the Bleckede area and pushed toward the Elbe.
