The story of Lt. Jim Flowers of the 90th US Infantry Division
During the period 10-12 July, 1944, the 90th was engaged in one of its toughest, most bitter battles - the fight to seize Mont Castre (Hill 122), the dominant terrain in this part of Normandy and the anchor of the Mahlman Line.
Jim called his tank commanders together, told them his plan to reach the encircled infantry battalion, and told S/Sgt. Taylor, the platoon sergeant, to bring up the tanks and meet him at a designated place on Hill 122 preparatory to launching an attack.
It was not realized at this time that the tanks had outrun the bulk of the infantry during their advance through the thick brush on Mont Castre, creating a gap of 400 or 500 yards between Flowers' platoon and the 3rd Bn.
