The division was deactivated in 1991; confusingly, the 5th Infantry Division was redesignated as "2nd Armored Division" in 1992, then became the 4th Infantry Division in December 1995.
It served with the 1st and 9th Armies, and was assigned to the 12th Army Group throughout the war.
On March 1, 1945, the division attacked across the Cologne Plain, crossed the Rhine River on March 27, fought the Battle for the Teutoberger Wald Passes from April 2, crossed the Weser River on April 5, and assaulted Magdeburg April 17.

The Ninth Armored Division, under the command of Maj. Gen.
John W. L e o n a r d, joined the "immortals" of military history March 7, 1945, by its spectacular capture of the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen and its subsequent swift establishment of the first Allied foothold east of the Rhine.
The patch with the big "A" is the patch for the Third Army which the 9th Armored Division was attached to for part of the war.

Early in 1945 the 9th began to drive on the West Wall and to the Roer River.
When the 9th reached Remagen, Brig Gen William M Hoge, commanding Combat Command B of the Division, saw the bridge was intact.
His orders were followed to the letter, however, and a handful of 9th Armored troopers fort to the east bank of the river to establish a bridgehead, and the ground around the bridge as well as the span itself was seized.

At times, the 9th fought as a unit with all of the regiments together; at other times, the regiments were assembled into “Regimental Combat Teams” (“R.C.T.”) with attached support such as armor, and could be used independently.

Some us managed to acquire Russian overcoats, and as the wagon came through the gate, we would sneak over and help push it into the cook shack.
The first thing the Americans did was to send us to the mess hall, where we were served roast beef, potatoes (not rotten), green beans, bread and butter, and coffee.

Marden Goodwin was drafted in July 1941 and cadréd from 3rd Armored Division to become one of the original members of the 7th Armored Division 1 March 1942.
The 48th Armored Infantry Regiment, parent of 23 AIB, 38 AIB, and 48 AIB, was reactivated as the 48th Infantry Regiment in 1989 and the 1st Battalion is now at Ft. Leonard Wood.

It is possible within the present U.S. knowledge - provided extensive detailed development is undertaken--to construct a piloted aircraft which has the general description of the object in subparagraph (e) above which would be capable of an approximate range of 700 miles at subsonic speeds.
If these offices were not aware of the US possession of the Horten flying wing(s) then the so-called UFO cover-up exceeded their need-to-know and began _before_ the Roswell incident.

After the US 9th Armored Division took the bridge, the German Wehrmacht intensified its efforts to destroy the bridge.
On March 17th, the day the bridge collapsed, a V2 missile, called a “retaliatory weapon” by the propaganda, was fired upon the Bridge at Remagen, the only time the V2 was used on a German target.

There were heavy casualties when soldiers of the 11th Armored Division liberated my home town of Schleusingen in (Thuringia/Thüringen) from Nazi rule in April 1945.
This is not a US Government project, but I am able to help coordinate a ceremony for those who will be in the Czech Republic.
As a retired Armor officer (1975-1995) and a dyed-in-wool sports car racer, I noticed with interest that elements of the 11AD over-ran a 200-bed German field hospital in the town of Nurburg, the home of the famous Nürburgring race track, on or about 7 March 1945.

A U.S. soldier was killed, and 19 U.S. soldiers and a third country national contractor were injured when the transport bus they were in overturned at approximately 9:50 a.m.
He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Three died in Al Haqlaniyah, Iraq, on Oct. 3, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations.
Benson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 314th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 78th Division, Fort Drum, N.Y. Lance Cpl. Evenor C. Herrera, 22, of Gypsum, Colo., died Aug. 10 from wounds received from the detonation of an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations near Ar Ramadi, Iraq.

When the US 3rd Army Corps reached the Gotha plant on April 14, 1945, three Ho 229 prototypes (V4, V5 and V6) were discovered in various stages of construction.
The Ho 229 V3, which was under construction at the end of the war, was also seized, and was subsequently shipped to the USA for evaluation.
When U.S. troops captured Gotha's Friedrichsroda plant on April 14, 1945, the partly completed Go 229 V3 was found and transported to the U.S. and is at present held in storage at NASM's Silver Hill facility.
