Constitutional law | LII / Legal Information Institute
The broad topic of constitutional law deals with the interpretation and implementation of the United States Constitution.
Article VI of The United States Constitution states that the "Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all treaties made or shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the Supreme Law of the Land." See The Supremacy Clause: U.S. Constitution, art.
The Constitution was interpreted, in 1819, as giving the Supreme Court the power to invalidate any state actions that interfere with the Constitution and the laws and treaties passed pursuant to it.

Common law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The common law, as applied in civil cases (as distinct from criminal cases), was devised as a means of compensating someone for wrongful acts known as torts, including both intentional torts and torts caused by negligence, and as developing the body of law recognizing and regulating contracts.
By their nature, equity and law were frequently in conflict and litigation would frequently continue for years as one court countermanded the other, even though it was established by the 17th century that equity should prevail.
In England, courts of law and equity were combined by the Judicature Acts of 1873 and 1875, with equity being supreme in case of conflict.

 What is Constitutional Law?
Experts in constitutional law may participate in cases that seem to be in clear violation of the constitution.
Thus constitutional law and its interpretation are constantly subject to scrutiny and it is possible, though difficult, to amend the constitution.
Some landmark amendments to the constitution that have changed the way the US administers the law are the 13th amendment which abolished slavery, and the 26th amendment which made it illegal to stop anyone over 18 from voting.

Teaching the EU: PEDAGOGICAL GOALS AND APPROACHES IN TEACHING EUROPEAN UNION LAW
The expansion in law school teaching has naturally been matched by a substantial increase in legal scholarship devoted to EU law in US journals, especially the international journals.
Law school teaching methodology tends to concentrate on analysis of the Treaty texts, secondary legislation, and especially case law of the Court of Justice and Court of First Instance.
Presumably today most EU law courses devote between a third and two-thirds of class time to the constitutional law and institutional structure, with special emphasis on the doctrines of supremacy, direct effect, and basic right protection.

International law has always been messy, the Law of Nations has always been unclear, and the national sovereignty we cherish is a fragile creation of the era of nation-states which began in the Reformation.
Historically, international law’s basic principle was that might makes right, and the idea of the sovereignty of individual nations in the work of the great civilian treatise writers on international law— Grotius, Pufendorf, Burlemaqui, and Vattel— aimed to secure for nations the right to govern themselves.
England’s champions of the rule of law— men such as Coke, Blackstone and Burke— were enormously influential to the framers of the U.S. Constitution.

 Constitutional Law
The U.S. Constitution performs two main functions: first, it creates and empowers the principal organs of the federal government; and second, it imposes limits on the actions that may be taken by the federal government, the states, and the subdivisions of the latter.
Yet the Constitution originally intended to limit the confiscatory and regulatory powers of temporary majorities, and the restraints it imposed were enforced for much of U.S. history.
Thus, state constitutions and their impact on state and local government, as well as on the manner in which many federal mandates are executed, are of great significance not only in the distribution of government powers, but also in the work of lawyers in every part of the country.
