The Marshals and their Deputies served the subpoenas, summonses, writs, warrants, and other process issued by the courts, made all the arrests, and handled all the prisoners.
The Marshals Service has changed with it, not in its underlying responsibility to enforce the law and execute the orders issued by the court, but in the breadth of its functions, the professionalism of its personnel, and the sophistication of the technologies employed.

US law enforcement agencies nabbed more than 10,000 fugitives, including sex offenders and wanted gang members, in a week-long sweep, officials said today.
The operation, dubbed Falcon III and conducted by US Marshals backed up by thousands of federal, state and local personnel, was described as the largest ever such round up and involved the arrests of 10,773 fugitives.
Some of those arrested were sex offenders who had failed to register as required under the terms of their release, while others were wanted for sexual assault, attempted murder and childsex charges.
