In a letter dated September 21, 2000 US Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt conveyed his decision that the remains of Kennewick Man are Native American under the meaning of NAGPRA and that these remains are culturally affiliated with five claimant tribes.
On September 25, 2000, the Department of the Interior (DOI) released a letter dated September 21, 2000 from Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt to the Honorable Louis Caldera, Secretary of the Army regarding the Department of the Interior's assessment of cultural affiliation for Kennewick Man in connection with the Bonnichsen et al.
The Secretary's involvement in the case results from the Department of the Army's delegation of its authority to DOI (accepted in March, 1998) to determine whether the Kennewick remains are Native American under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and to decide on the appropriate disposition of the remains.

Although the US has only one vote, and as of December last year (Kyoto meeting of the WHC) is no longer on the Bureau, it is by far the most influential member of the Committee.
The US delegate voted with the rest of the Committee last year, to place Kakadu on the 'in Danger' list, pending yet another decision which will take place in July 12 at an extraordinary meeting of the WHC in Paris.
However, there are indications that the position of the US delegation may be at best wobbly, and they have been far too inclined to listen to the Australian delegation, who want to mine uranium in Kakadu without it being listed as' in Danger'.

Attorney General Janet Reno formally requested February 11 the appointment of an independent counsel to investigate charges of corruption and perjury against Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt.
This event was the turning point in Babbitt's political career, catapulting him to national prominence as a right-wing "New Democrat," like his fellow governor from Arkansas, and leading to an abortive presidential bid in 1988, followed by his selection as Secretary of the Interior by Clinton.
Babbitt has denied any direct involvement in the casino decision, which was made by a lower-level Interior Department official, and in sworn testimony before a Senate subcommittee last year he denied that White House pressure, based on the anticipated campaign contribution, was responsible for the outcome.
