History of the 20th Air Force
The Twentieth Air Force, though not formed until April 1944 and not announced until the first strike against the Japanese home islands in June 1944, had is beginning in an idea of General of the Army Henry H. Arnold, commanding general of the Army Air Forces as far back as 1939.
In that vision was the birth of the B-29 and the Twentieth Air Force.
It was under this broad scope of operation the Twentieth Air Force, the XX Bomber Command and its combat unit, the 58th Bombardment Wing, were committed to action.

Hap Arnold’s creation of Twentieth Air Force to spearhead a strategic bombing offensive in the Pacific not only led to Japan’s defeat but also proved to be a landmark in the long struggle of airmen to organize and operate an independent air force.
According to the official US Army history, the Air Staff developed a concept that was a “radical departure from the [existing] chain of command.” Under the new concept, Arnold would command Twentieth as executive agent of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The experience of Twentieth Air Force in World War II proved to be a landmark in demonstrating the independent use of airpower.

Bolster the B-2 Fleet Now:Future Challenges Demand Penetrating Bomber
Current Air Force plans call for maintaining a fleet of 130 operational bombers through 2037, at which time the B-52s will be 80 years old, the B-1s close to 60, and B-2s, 45.
If the Japanese were to get squeamish about allowing U.S. forces use of their bases in the defense of Taiwan, the bomber, which flew 30-plus hour missions from its base in Missouri during last year’s war, could prove even more vital.
A future bomber force study conducted by Commission on Roles and Missions staff in 1995 argued that the total force of 40 to 60 B-2s was needed to meet the demands of the current and emerging security environment, and suggested several offsetting force structure cuts to pay for it.

Twentieth Air Force Headquarters' location also changed in 1993, moving from Vandenberg AFB CA to its current home at Francis E. Warren AFB WY. ICBM force structure was reduced radically as well during the 1990s, downsizing from six wings to three, and from 1,000 alert ICBMs to 550.
Along with the highly visible force reductions, perhaps the most significant change (and challenge) for the ICBM business was that "nuclear" was no longer the preeminent Air Force mission as it once had been during the Cold War.
US forces are deployed to a number of expeditionary commitments abroad and we face a growing threat from at least two dozen states armed with WMD.
