 Historical Notes: Science fiction
And as science fiction developed, accounts of the future sometimes treated extraterrestrials as commonplace - and sometimes did not mention them at all.
The most common fictional scenario for first contact with extraterrestrials is the arrival of spacecraft - often induced by us having passed a technology threshold such as radio, nuclear explosions or faster-than-light travel.
Communication is established - as often in science fiction - by the intelligence interpreting material that we supply, and then replying in the same format.

Science fiction on television   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The first known piece of television science fiction anywhere in the world was produced by the BBC 's fledgling television service, then less than eighteen months old, on February 11 1938.
Television began to cater for this perhaps more cerebral type of science fiction viewer, possibly inspired by the boom of literary science fiction by the likes of Isaac Asimov which was beginning to take place, or by the rise of the allegorical science-fiction movies that permeated the decade.
One of the stalwarts of science fiction television in its early decades was to be the anthology series, in which a completely new story would be presented with each episode, with new actors, settings and situations, the only link being the producers, genre and the series title.

 Television Heaven
The only US science fiction series in over three decades to offer a serious challenge to Paramount's mighty Star Trek juggernaut, veteran writer/producer J. Michael Straczynski's creation is a richly textured, grandly sweeping televisual epic novel.
Premiering with pilot episode, "The Gathering" on the TNT in the US on February 1993, the series chronicles the galaxy threatening events arising from the reawakening of a mysterious and near all-powerful alien race known only as "The Shadows" on the human and alien inhabitants of the last of the great Babylon stations, Babylon 5.
Ambitious, complex, intelligent and truly epic in sweep, Babylon 5 proved beyond doubt that there was something more to US television science-fiction than the familiar universe of Roddenberry and Berman's ageing Trek franchise, and in the process, also succeeded in enthralling and entertaining millions of television viewers the world over.

Article: Brains vs. Brawn: The Birthright Trend in Current Science Fiction Television Programming, by Ingrid de Beus
This year, viewers have over a dozen different science fiction television programs to choose from (if they have cable), and the Kirk/Spock paradigm is as strong as ever.
It's possible that this is nothing more than a bit of high fantasy sneaking into science fiction (Star Wars, with its knights and princesses, is the classic example of that), but it could also be a reflection of a societal inclination in America to trust the mystical over the rational.
Strange as it may seem, the growing popularity of science fiction on television springs from the declining faith in education in American society.

Based on Sax Rohmer's fictional creations of 1908-1910, there is a politically incorrect tinge of "yellow peril" racism in these episodes today, which was also common in the Australian science fiction of its day.
This falls within the definition of science fiction, in that it explicitly relates science and technology and their effect on human beings.
