Flexible films are defined as being planar forms of plastics, which may be thick enough to be self-supporting but thin enough to be flexed, folded and/or creased without cracking.
Films comprise around 25% of all plastics used worldwide, around 40 million tons, and are thus a massive market sector.
Films are mainly used in packaging for foodstuffs, but there are also substantial market segments for medical, electronic, automotive and construction applications.

 USA Films in high gear
USA Films -- which began life as Gramercy Pictures, a co-venture between Universal and PolyGram, before falling under the umbrella of Barry Diller's USA Networks and then absorbing October Films -- has proved itself one of the survivors in the ever-changing indie landscape.
On a larger corporate scale, USA Networks is in the process of creating a joint venture with Vivendi Universal that would put the film and television assets from both companies under control of the Universal Entertainment Group, with Diller at its head.
The merging of assets could spell the end of Universal's specialty film label, Universal Focus -- at a December news conference, Diller suggested as much -- but it should raise the profile of USA Films in that it is likely to become the premier specialty-film division in the new Universal family.
