The Agriculture Department has a toll-free number to call for information about the incident or about consumer-identity protections.

Since 1997, there has been a ban on the use of most animal proteins in cattle feed because it is thought that these proteins could spread the disease.

WE must not forget that the risk from BSE in the USA was going to be discussed in the US in February 2004 at a major committee and that good mathematical models were being put together to know what to do if a problem such as BSE should arrive in the country.
The turnover in the USA of beef is estimated to be $70 billion and this appears to be growing faster than inflation currently.
