On the 16th Ingham broke away from the convoy to investigate a sighting of light brown smoke on the horizon and on approaching closer definitely sighted a submarine with conning tower and diesel oil smoke from the exhaust plainly visible.
On the 17th Ingham and Duane departed the west-bound convoy to intercept the eastbound convoy SC-87 of nine vessels bound for Iceland.
The Ingham then proceeded to search the area and on the 5th passed through what appeared to be pieces of cork wreckage, pieces of bulkhead and rubber tires which were strewn over the ocean for a distance of 35 miles.

 USCGC Ingham, WHEC 35
Ingham was assigned to the Navy on 1 July 1941 and was sent to relieve Campbell in Lisbon.
After her conversion to an AGC, done in the Charleston Navy Yard between 1 August and 21 October 1944, Ingham was assigned to duty in the Pacific, and served throughout the campaign to liberate the Philippine Islands.
Ingham, after most of her added wartime armament was removed and she was converted for peace-time duty, circa 1946.

The Ingham supplies relief to her "brood of chicks" in the Gulf of Siam during Operation Sea Lords Fall 1968.
Note how Ingham used it the rigging from its boat davits to heel the PCF over so the hole could be exposed.

The first event of the reunion was a trip on Thursday, the 22nd, to Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, the site of the beginning of the Civil War.
It is about a 35 minute boat ride to the site.
Friday morning, we headed to Patriots’ Point where the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10), the submarine USS Clamagore (SS-343), the destroyer USS Laffey (DD-724) and the Coast Guard Cutter USCG Ingham (WHEC-35) are permanent exhibits.

TANEY was one of seven Secretary Class cutters designed to meet the changing needs of the Coast Guard as the country emerged from Prohibition.
USCGC ROGER B. A historical synopsis from original WW2 records by CAPTAIN DENNIS M. When the Japanese attacked on 7th of December 1941, three Coast Guard ships were moored in Honolulu harbor and one was on patrol just to the west of Barber's Point Lighthouse.
In Aug. of 1941 the U.S. Coast Guard was adopted by the U.S. Navy.

USCGC GRESHAM was a converted Navy ship, about the same size as TANEY and with the same mission.
I got married, had a son, and by the strangest of coincidences, that son decided to join the Coast Guard in 1981 and made a career of it.
To my surprise, also there was the decommissioned USCGC INGHAM, the only remaining sister ship of the TANEY, the ships being so nearly identical.

One of the latter, USCGC Winnebago (WHEC-40), sent her whaleboat across to Wrangell on 21 November while off the Mekong Delta in what Wrangell's command history termed "what may well be history's smallest rearming." Winnebago's request: five rounds of 5-inch ammunition!
