The increase is attributed to better yields than last year in Kenya's northern grain basket and an increase in national corn area to 1.750 million hectares due chiefly to high local prices for the past two years and good rains at the start of the season.
The USDA August estimate for 2005/06 Russia wheat production is 47.0 million tons, unchanged from last month and up 1.7 million from last year.

On April 8, 2003, Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture would provide surplus USDA stocks of non-fat dry milk to livestock producers in areas hardest hit by continuing drought.
Veneman said the 2003 Non-fat Dry Milk Livestock Feed Assistance would provide timely relief for livestock producers in areas hit hardest by drought by making available surplus stocks of non-fat dry milk (NDM information), that was not intended for nor destined for human consumption.
USDA entered into agreements with state and tribal governments to coordinate the movement of the non-fat dry milk to eligible producers.

 Gypsy Moth in North America
The USDA, State and local governments also jointly participate in programs to locate and eradicate new gypsy moth populations in currently uninfested areas.
In 1992, the USDA Forest Service began a pilot program to test the feasibility of slowing the spread (STS) of the gypsy moth in North America.
This work is funded by the USDA Forest Service, the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the USDA Cooperative State Research Service, the USDA Animal and Plant Health and Inspection Service, and numerous state and private Universities.

 USDA to Hold Briefings on Available USDA Programs
WASHINGTON, February 6, 2003 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture will hold the sixth in its series of informational briefings Feb. 24 in Pasco, Wash., to acquaint farmers, ranchers and other constituents with a wide array of agency services and to highlight changes and new provisions in the 2002 Farm Bill.
(registration and continental breakfast begins at 7:00 a.m.) The session, organized by the USDA Office of Outreach and hosted by Risk Management Agency, will provide presentations on a broad array of topics including conservation programs, insurance and drought relief programs, food and nutrition programs and rural utilities, rural business and rural housing programs.

 South Africa Corn Area at Low Levels
As of January 12, 2004, USDA forecasts South Africa’s 2003/04 corn production at 8.0 million tons, down 0.9 million from last month, and down 1.7 million from last year’s crop.
Corn area for both commercial and developing sectors is forecast at 3.1 million hectares, down 200,000 hectares from last month and down 550,000 hectares from last year.
USDA’s current yield estimate of 2.58 tons per hectare is slightly below the 5-year average due to reduced potential yields caused by dry weather conditions in December and January.
