The framework for the system and the research agenda to develop it were established in a national workshop on assessing the economic impacts of recreation and tourism held at Michigan State University in 1984 (Propst 1985).
Proposed developments like a new state park or the addition of new slips to an existing marina can quickly be evaluated in terms of the change in economic activity (employment, income, sales, value added) stemming from the injection of new visitor spending into a region.
Locations of supporting and service industries In assessing impacts of tourism it is often useful to separate visitor origins from the destination when defining the region.
