The first Catawba was an ironclad built for the American Civil War, but never commissioned and sold to Peru, where she was renamed Atahualpa and served in the War of the Pacific.
The second Catawba (YT-32), ex-Howard Greene (renamed 20 July 1920), served as a district tug at Washington from 1918 to 1922, at Norfolk, Virginia from 1922 to 1933, and at Charleston, South Carolina from 1933 through 1946.

USNS Apache (T-ATF 172) was the last of the Powhatan class of ocean tugs delivered to the Navy in 1981.
Two units (ATF 166, 167) have been deactivated and placed on commercial lease, subject to recall for USN salvage use.
Ex-USS Saratoga (AVT-60), one of the inactive aircraft carriers mothballed at the old Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, was towed out of Philadelphia for the last time 03 August 1998 by the Fleet-tug USNS Powhatan (T-ATF-166).

The CATAWBA is equipped with a 10-ton capacity crane and a bollard pull of at least 54 tons.

After successful completion of his tour in October 1999, Senior Chief Sassenger departed USNS CATAWBA (T-ATF-168) and reported to USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG-68) where he served as ADP Work Center Supervisor.
During this assignment he deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch and was later advanced to Chief Petty Officer.

Under the direction of the Office of the USN Supervisor of Salvage, a Phoenix search and recovery team reported aboard USNS CATAWBA (T-ATF 168) on 9 September to initiate shipboard installation of equipment.
After comprehensively mapping all potential objects of interest, USNS CATAWBA anchored over the debris field on 15 September and deployed the Navy’s Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), DEEP DRONE, to identify and recover specific components of the airplane.
Portions of both engines along with other essential pieces of the aircraft were rigged and retrieved by DEEP DRONE using ROV through-frame and manipulator recovery techniques.

 Seabee Divers Survey Iraqi Piers
On March 6, the 12-man UCT 1 team loaded their gear aboard fleet ocean tug USNS Catawba (T-ATF 168) and headed to Umm Qasr.
There they completed the first-ever mooring of a U.S. Navy ship to an Iraqi pier, and immediately began their work by lowering a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) over the side of Catawba to engage in a �side scan survey� of the piers.
The Iraqi Navy provided boat security for UCT 1 divers and Catawba for the duration of the project.

For over 10 years I was one of three Project Engineers responsible for the maintenance and repair of the Navy's submersible's TURTLE and SEA CLIFF.
I also did a year's tour with Military Sealift COmmand-Pacific as a Port Engineer for the USNS CATAWBA (T-ATF 168) while stationed in the Arabian Gulf.

Three U.S. Navy ships, the destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75), the frigate USS Hawes (FFG 53) and the fast combat support ship USS Camden (AOE 2), are now in the area and are providing repair and logistical support.
They will be joined shortly by the fleet ocean tug USNS Catawba (T-ATF 168) and the USS Tarawa (LHA 1) Amphibious Ready Group, which includes USS Duluth (LPD 6) and USS Anchorage (LSD 36).
Sailors on board the assisting Navy ships will stand watches on USS Cole to give COLE Sailors a rest.

USS Cole (DDG 67), showing the results of an attack that killed 17 of her crew and injured 39 others, is towed away from the port city of Aden, Yemen, into open sea by the Military Sealift Command fleet ocean tug USNS Catawba (T-ATF 168) today.
Additionally USNS Catawba (T-AFT 168), USS Camden (AOE 2), USS Anchorage (LSD 36), USS Duluth (LPD 6), and USS Tarawa (LHA 1) arrived in Aden some days later, providing watch relief crews, harbor security, damage control equipment, billeting, and food service for the crew of Cole.
Seventeen sailors were killed and 39 others were injured in the blast which blew a hole in the port side of the destroyer.
