In February 1999, USNS Antares was activated to carry U.S. Army cargo in support of the NATO peacekeeping mission Operation Joint Guard to the Balkan port of Rijeka, Croatia.
In 1994, USNS Antares was called into action to transport equipment and supplies to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where Haitian and Cuban refugees were provided safe haven by U.S. forces.
USNS stands for United States Naval Ship and is used to designate U.S. Navy ships crewed by civilian mariners rather than active duty military personnel.

USNS Pollux (T-AKR 290): According to a comment at NRO, this fast sealift ship is "operating onboard dialysis equipment for the patients of a local hospital, providing diesel fuel for area hospitals' generators, and providing meals and berthing to relief workers".

Named after the the southernmost of two bright stars in the constellation Gemini, the USNS POLLUX is the fourth ALGOL - class fast sealift ship and the fourth ship in the Navy to bear the name.
POLLUX, the last ship in her class to finish conversion, was delivered to the Military Sealift Command in 1986.
Since then, the POLLUX was involved in several operations including Desert Shield/Desert Storm (1990/91), Restore Hope (1992) and Operation Enduring Freedom (2001 -).

All eight were converted to Fast Sealift Ships in 1984-1985, with the last of the eight Fast Deployment Logistics Ships (TAK-R) conversions completed in 1986.
USNS Algol, a 43,000-ton vehicle cargo ship, was built at Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1973 as the merchant vessel Sea-Land Exchange.
One of a group of eight very fast container ships with significant defense logistics potential, she was acquired by the Navy in October 1981 and named Algol.

 The Legacy of the Purple Foxes
All 12 CH-46Es were flown from Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Camp Pendleton to Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, CA, shrunk-wrapped, and craned into the hull of the USNS Pollux (T-AKR 290), a Military Sealift Command fast sealift ship - another first for transportation of CH-46Es in Marine Corps history.
Several squadron Marines were assigned as the security force for the vessel, while the main body was flown to Ali Salem Air Base.
By the end of February the Pollux had reached Kuwait, been offloaded, and all 12 helicopters flown to Ali Salem.

Navy-owned ships carry "USNS" prefixes with their names; others have civilian prefixes (M/V, S/S, etc.).
The new-construction/new-conversion prepositioning ships are roll-on/roll-off vehicle cargo ships, with additional container and general-cargo capbility, meant to carry large numbers of Marine Corps or Army vehicles and supplies.
Notes: A tanker built using the stern section of a previous USNS Potomac (T-AO 150), which was destroyed by an explosion in 1961.

The Surge LMSRs can be ready to sail in 96 hours, like the Fast Sealift Ships.
The Surge Project Office received a new LMSR, USNS Fisher, in fiscal year 1999, ending the year with two of the eleven LMSRs being added to the surge fleet to meet DOD mobility requirements.
Three LMSRs -- USNS Gordon, USNS Seay and USNS Yano -- joined the surge fleet in FY 2000, bringing the total to five.
