USNS Yano is one of 19 large, medium-speed, roll-on/roll-off ships, called LMSRs, which will be built or converted at U.S. shipyards by the year 2001 in response to the need for expanded sealift capability identified in a congressionally-mandated study done in the early 1990s.
USNS Shughart (T-AKR 295) and USNS Gordon (T-AKR 296), the first two conversion LMSRs, were delivered to MSC last year and presently are undergoing shakedown off the U.S. East Coast in preparation for joining the MSC fleet.
USNS Yano honors Sergeant First Class Rodney J.T. Yano of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, a Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in Vietnam in 1969 while serving as a helicopter crew chief with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

 Sealift - Navy Ships
USNS Bob Hope, the first ship in its class, was delivered on 18 November 1998.
The third PREPO tanker is the USNS Henry J. Kaiser (T-AO 187) and is capable of console operations with additional manning and rig activation.
The TS EMPIRE STATE, normally used for training students at the New York State Maritime Academy, was activated to repatriate troops from Somalia.

 USNS Yano to be named
Vice Adm. Phil Quast, USN, commander of the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command, will help name USNS Yano (T-AKR 297) at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company in San Diego, Calif., on Jan. 18.
The third of five conversion ships, Yano initially will be used to preposition U.S. Army combat support equipment at sea, and later will serve as a surge asset for the transport of military cargo.

 World Navies Today: US Navy Sealift Ships
Navy-owned ships carry "USNS" prefixes with their names; others have civilian prefixes (M/V, S/S, etc.).
The new-construction/new-conversion prepositioning ships are roll-on/roll-off vehicle cargo ships, with additional container and general-cargo capbility, meant to carry large numbers of Marine Corps or Army vehicles and supplies.
Notes: A tanker built using the stern section of a previous USNS Potomac (T-AO 150), which was destroyed by an explosion in 1961.

It has a combined military/civil service crew and does travel with the fleet providing repleenishment.
They are navy owned, painted grey w/ a blue/gold band around the stack and have USNS preceding their name.
The purely commercial vessels with merchant crews do not travel with the fleet, not to my knowledge anyway.

The Surge LMSRs can be ready to sail in 96 hours, like the Fast Sealift Ships.
The Surge Project Office received a new LMSR, USNS Fisher, in fiscal year 1999, ending the year with two of the eleven LMSRs being added to the surge fleet to meet DOD mobility requirements.
Three LMSRs -- USNS Gordon, USNS Seay and USNS Yano -- joined the surge fleet in FY 2000, bringing the total to five.
