USNS Mary Sears (T-AGS 65) and USNS John McDonnell (T-AGS 51) will sail from Sasebo, Japan, early next week.

 Oiler Tippecanoe Pumps Aid Into Tsunami Relief Efforts
ABOARD USNS TIPPECANOE, At Sea (NNS) -- Delivering fuel is its speciality, but with relief supplies needed to support Operation Unified Assistance in January, the deck of fleet replenishment oiler USNS Tippecanoe (T-AO 199) has become a staging platform for aid.
While providing fuel to keep ships and aircraft operating in the Indian Ocean topped off, Tippecanoe has been acting as a conduit for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) materials, repeatedly traversing miles of ocean between Singapore and Sumatra to help victims of the tsunami that wracked the area Dec. 26.
Tippecanoe is currently assigned to the U.S. 7th Fleet Logistics Force (Commander, Task Force 73).

The Kaiser class oilers were intended to provide a one-class replacement for all earlier AO, AOR and T-AO classes.
The keel for the first ship, USNS Henry J Kaiser, was laid in August of 1984.

From the early beginnings of Operation Desert Fox on Dec. 16, the crew of the U.S. Navy Military Sealift Command replenishment oiler USNS Tippecanoe (T-AO 199) worked tirelessly around the clock providing fuel to keep U.S. and British forces operational.
The ship, under the command of Capt. Mark Wilson, transferred more than one million gallons of marine diesel fuel and nearly 15,000 gallons of JP-5 aircraft fuel to seven U.S. Navy destroyers, one U.S. Navy frigate and one British frigate during the four-day operation.
Tippecanoe is one of 18 Military Sealift Command ships supporting U.S. forces in the U.S. 5th Fleet operating area.

Three were taken out of service, but one has been reactivated (AO 189) with two remaining in reserve (AO 188, 190).
AO 201, 203, 204 were modified while building to become the first double-hull USN tankers, delaying their completion.
These are the last USN salvage tugs, but are supplemented by the ATFs and chartered ships in the salvage and fleet support role.

MSC combat stores ship USNS San Jose (T-ASF 7), en route to Guam after supporting humanitarian assistance operations in the region since Jan. 6, has also been directed to Nias Island.
MSC oiler USNS Tippecanoe (T-AO 199) will also be on hand to provide supply replenishment support to MSC ships in the area.
Mercy and Niagara Falls were in East Timor as part of a humanitarian aid mission being conducted as the hospital ship was en route back to her San Diego home when both ships were ordered to move toward Nias.

Tippecanoe, one of the Military Sealift Command’s 14 fleet replenishment oilers, is 677.5 feet in length, with a beam of 97.5 feet.
The ship displaces 41,225 long tons, and has a civilian crew of approximately 90, consisting of 74 civilian mariners and a detachment of approximately 16 U.S. Navy personnel.
