The mission of the USS MULBERRY was to transport, lay and recover mines and buoys.
The USS SHEA, assigned to COMINRON SEVEN was decomissioned in early 1958.

 USS Acme
Acme spent the year 1962 conducting tests and operational evaluations of her new mine countermeasures equipment which took her to various points along the California coast.
Acme got underway for type training on 6 January 1964 and spent most of February assisting in the evaluation of the Seanettle system.
Acme sailed to Keelung, Taiwan, on 26 April and pushed on to Sacebo, Japan, on 4 May. From this port, Acme began her iourney back to Long Beach.

 MSO 508 Acme - Navy Ships
During the Cold War the US mine warfare concept was designed around a European war scenario which relied on North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies to participate substantially in mine warfare operations.
The Navy's MCM capabilities in the Persian Gulf included the surface mine countermeasures (SMCM) capabilities of three 30-year-old USS Aggressive and USS Acme (MSO 422 and 508) class minesweepers.
These minesweepers used the AN/SQQ-14 MCM sonar to detect bottom and moored mines and mechanical minesweeping gear to cut mine cables.

Served in USS ENERGY MSO-436, straight out of RMA School at Bainbridge,Went aboard while she was in drydock at a fish factory at San Pedro, Ca.
I was on USS Excel (MSO439) in the mid 70's, USS Implicit (MSO455) in the late 70's, and on USS Avenger (MCM1) as a PLANKOWNER in the late 80's.

The "AM" Minesweepers were reclassified as Minesweeper, Ocean (MSO) on February 7, 1955 and the ships served the United States well for over 41 years.
The MSOs participated in almost every conflict that occurred during those years including the Lebanon Crisis, The Naval Quarantine of Cuba, Vietnam (Operation Market Time and End Sweep), Operation Earnest Will and operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

USS IMPLICIT MSO-455 was fired on by Viet Cong forces while cruising close to shore and was forced to retaliate with her 40mm, 30-and 50-caliber guns.
They were awarded medals for helping to destroy a Viet Cong coastal fortification which they approached in the ship's motor whaleboat.
USS ENDURANCE MSO-435 was then able to silence the shore resistance with her guns from about 1000 yards.

These were the first four boats, of an eventual 24, scheduled for out-of-contry overhaul because of serious hull corrosion in the main cabin bilges.
In the attempt to stop, or at least slow down the rate of hull corrosion in the remaining 62 PCF's not scheduled for these overhauls, a program was initiated involving the application of special anti-corrosive paint and placement of magnesium anodes throughout the bilges.
It sank alongside the USS Windham County (LST 1170), while being salvaged, a result of the battle damage, high winds and heavy seas, 6 September 1969.

The Dutch heavy lift ship SUPER SERVANT 3 carried the USS IMPERVIOUS (MSO-449), the USS ADROIT (MSO-509) and USS LEADER (MSO-490) to Norfolk from the Persian Gulf region, where the minesweepers were deployed for 14 months in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.
The ocean minesweepers were moored to the submerged deck of the heavy lift ship in preparation for transportation to the Middle East.

Comments: I'm originally from New Mexico, was a Gunner's Mate Missiles, GMM, and served aboard USS Oklahoma City CG-5, Yokosuka, Japan ('78 to '79), USS Horne CG-30, San Diego, CA ('79 to '81) and USS King DDG-41, Norfolk, VA ('82 to '86).
Then on to USS Joseph Strauss DDG 16 until the end of the Australia and New Zealand visit in early spring of 1969.
I was stationed at the Naval Net Depot Melville, R.I. from Dec l951 to July 1953 as 3rd class comissaryman, I transferred to the USS Harwood DD 861 In July 53 and left the ship in June l955.
