The USS Admiralty Islands (CVE-99) was a United States Navy Casablanca-class escort aircraft carrier, named after the Admiralty Islands group north of New Guinea, scene of fighting early in 1944.
On 29 October, Admiralty Islands sailed for the Naval Air Station, Alameda, California, to load Army aircraft and personnel for transportation to New Guinea.
Admiralty Islands left Pearl Harbor on 2 February to support carrier operations in the campaign to seize Iwo Jima.

USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a Portland-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy.
After delivering the first atomic bomb to be used in combat to the United States air base at Tinian Island on 26 July 1945, she was in the Philippine Sea when attacked at 00:14 on 30 July 1945 by a Japanese submarine.
The weather along this barren chain of islands is noted for continuous coldness; persistent and unpredictable fogs; constant rain, snow, and sleet; and sudden storms with violent winds and heavy seas.

 About USS Underhill
The USS Underhill 682 was launched on October 15, 1943, at the Bethlehem Steel Company's Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Massachusetts, after Christening ceremonies on this date.
In late January 1945, the Underhill was assigned to the 7th Fleet, Leyte, Philippine Islands, departing New London, Connecticut, on February 8, 1945, and arriving at Leyte on April 5th.
While the USS Underhill 682 and 112 of her men had been lost, she had accomplished her mission -- that of delivering her convoy safely to its destination.

 War History
The USS PENNSYLVANIA, together with the USS NEVADA joined the Fleet in 1916 as the first two oil burning U.S. Battleships, was told that she could not hope to operate with the forces seeking out the German Navy because she was "too modern".
At the beginning of the bombardment the island was covered with a dense growth of palm trees extending down to the waters edge, and at its conclusion not a single tree remained standing.
Almost two years later, February 10, 1948, the USS Pennsylvania was towed to the Island of Kwajalein in the South Pacific and a small crew went aboard and opened the "Sea Valves" and removed the Evaporator cover plates and sent the "Grand Old Gal" to the bottom of the sea.

 The Story and Memories of the USS VIRGO AKA-20 / AE-30, USS Virgo History
On July 16, 1943 the U.S.S. VIRGO (AKA-20), was placed in commission by Commander H. Sasse at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York; Commander C. McLaughlin, Commanding with a crew of two hundred seven (207) enlisted men and twenty-four (24) officers.
On the 15th, the vessel departed from San Diego enroute to Pearl Harbor The U.S.S. VIRGO arrived in Pearl Harbor on the 21st of September and proceeded to unload the marine equipment.
USS VIRGO officially became a Naval Ammunition Ship 19 August 1966, when she was re-commissioned in ceremonies held at Seattle, Washington following a reactivation at Todd Shipyard there.

On 29 April 1863, as Acting Rear Admiral Porter's flotilla was bombarding the Confederate batteries at Grand Gulf, his flagship, USS BERNTOPN, became unmanageable and was caught under heavy fire in a position where she could neither steer nor reply to the enemy guns.
After returning to Mare Island Navy Yard 17 September for final alterations, she cleared San Francisco,26 October as part of the screen for a convoy which reached Pearl Harbor 31 October 1943 where HOEL reported to Captain A. Cook, Commander of Destroyer Squadron 47, who then shifted his flag to her from HEERMANN.
Upon her return to Purvis Bay 14 April 1944, HOEL reported for duty to Rear Admiral R. Hayler, the commander of Cruiser Division 12 who kept her busy with training exercises and convoy duty until 14 August when she was assigned to the 3rd Amphibious Force then preparing for the invasion of the Palaus.

 USS BUSH Medical Report - Admiralty Islands 1944
The mission of the U.S.S. BUSH was to embark, transport, and land a portion of the landing force, and to support the landing by naval bombardment.
At 0842, March 1, 1944, word was received that a boat load of casualties would be sent to the U.S.S. At 1039 seven wounded army casualties were taken aboard, five stretcher and two ambulatory cases accompanied by Lt. George Novis (MC) AUS.
These wounded (see Cases II through VIII inclusive) were brought aboard by members of the after-repair party and transported by stretcher bearers and members of the forward-repair party to the forward battle-dressing station which is in the Officers Wardroom.

 U.S. Navy Battleships - USS Washington (BB 56)
At sunset on the 13th, Rear Admiral Lee took Washington, USS South Dakota (BB-57), and four destroyers and headed for Savo Island, the scene of the disastrous night action of 8 and 9 August, to be in position to intercept the Japanese convoy and its covering force.
Washington fueled east of that chain of islands and then continued her screening duties with TG 58.4 to the south and west of Saipan, supporting the continuing air strikes on islands in the Marianas, the strikes concentrated on Guam by that point.
On that day, Washington, with USS Iowa (BB-61), USS Indiana, Alabama, the light cruiser USS Birmingham (CL-62), and a destroyer screen, was detached from the screen of TG 58.4, forming TG 58.7, under Vice Admiral Lee.

 USS Admiralty Islands
Adolph Hugel-a schooner built at Philadelphia in 1860-was purchased there by Capt. Samuel F. Du Pont on 21 September 1861 to participate in his impending expedition against Port Royal, S.C., and then to serve in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron which he hoped to base at that port.
From that port, she proceeded via Hampton Roads, Va., Key West Fla.; and Ship Island Miss., to the Mississippi Delta which she reached on 18 March.
Upon arriving there, she was promptly towed over the bar off the mouth of Pass a i'Outre and into the river.

The USS PICKING had her keel laiid on 24 November 1942, was launched on 15 June 1943 and was commissioned at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on 21 September 1943.
After a period of training and rehearsal exercises in Hawaiian waters, the destroyer departed for Manus, Admiralty Islands, on September 15th as one of the escort vessels for several divisions of attack transports.
The attack force entered Leyte Gulf, Philippine Islands, on the 20th after an uneventful voyage and, during the next four days, the DD685 functioned as part of the antiaircraft and antisubmarine screen for transports and landing craft during the assault on the southern beaches.

She then steamed to Adak Island, Alaska, and from 30 November 1943 to 8 August 1994 engaged in patrol and ASW duties off Attu Island.
This duty was interrupted 1 February 1944 when she sailed from Massacre Bay, Attu, to participate in the 3 to 4 February bombardment of Paramushiru, Kurile Islands, with TF 94 of the Northern Pacific Force.
She patrolled the coast of the politically disturbed island until 8 May. She returned to the Mediterranean in June for 4 months of operations with units of the Spanish, French, Greek, and Italian Navies In September she operated with Correy (DD-817) in the Black Sea, and she returned to the Mediterranean late in 1965.

We, the crew didn't know much about this island but knowing it was just above Yap which was supposed to be one of the Japs stronghold, we thought we may find some trouble in this invasion.
From the way we hear about the fighting ashore, the island is more than 3/4ths ours now but the mopping up process will be slow for they are certainly dug in.

Arnold J. Isbell (DD-869) was laid down on 14 March 1945 at Staten Island N.Y., by the Bethlehem Steel Co.; launched on 6 August 1945; sponsored by Mrs.
February found Arnold J. Isbell back in the United States and being overhauled by the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Mare Island, Calif. Her next six and one-half months were devoted to yard work and refresher training.
She made stops at the Admiralty Islands, Guam, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Okinawa, and Japan before returning to California in June 1958.

Mindanao, and seven motor minesweepers (YMS) moored to her starboard side, were damaged by the blast, as were USS Alhena (AKA-9), in the photo's top left center, and USS Oberrender (DE-344), in top right.
USS Mindanao had 180 crewmen killed and injured by this explosion.
