  USS Agerholm (DD-826) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Agerholm (DD-826) was a Gearing class destroyer in the United States Navy.
Agerholm steamed many miles in support of the Formosa patrol, designed to deter both the Chinese Nationalists and the Chinese communists from invading each other, before she returned to her home port on 16 April.
Agerholm arrived in San Diego on 8 April and spent the rest of 1975 and 1976 on the west coast participating in local operations and midshipman training cruises, and eventually landing a role in the movie Airport '77.

U.S.S. HISTORY:The U.S.S. AGERHOLM was named for Medal of Honor recipient PFC Harold Christ Agerholm, USMCR.
AGERHOLM was 390 feet 6 inches in length, with a beam of 40 feet, 10 inches.
After her initial "shakedown" cruise, AGERHOLM was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and arrived in her new home port of San Diego, California on 21 January 1947.

Agerholm (DD-826) was laid down on 10 September 1945 at Bath, Maine, by the Bath Iron Works; launched on 30 March 1946; sponsored by Mrs.
Agerholm steamed many miles in support of the Formosa patrol, designed to deter both the Chinese Nationalists and the Chinese communists from invading each other, before she returned to her home port on 16 April 1954.
Agerholm returned to the gunline on 15 May, conducting shore bombardments off Phan Thiet until 23 May. She then reported to Chicago (CG-11) on PIRAZ station in the Gulf of Tonkin for her last assignment.

USS Cunningham (DD 752), in the Wonsan area, was taken under fire by three guns, estimated 105 to 155 mm, at an initial range of 3,500 yards.
USS Shields (DD 596), USS Seiverling (DE 441) and minesweeps in Wonsan Harbor were fired upon by approximately 75 rounds of estimated 75/76 mm in four and five salvos.
USS Marshall (DD 676) in Wonsan area was fired upon by 20 rounds of estimated 75/76 mm shells from an enemy shore battery.

The launching ship, USS Ethan Allen, was stationed 1,300 miles southeast of the Hawaiian islands and established an aim point some 1,100 miles away – 525 miles east-northeast of Christmas Island, from which most of the support efforts were staged.
USS Agerholm (DD-826) was the firing ship, with USS Richard B. Anderson (DD-786) as a backup.
Agerholm and Anderson were elements of Joint Task Group 8.9 (JTG-8.9), to which – following Frigate Bird – RADM Mustin was brought by Yorktown, where he shifted his flag to USS Monticello (LSD-35), the Swordfish command/support ship.

Comments: I was an aircrewman with a VS squadron operating from either USS Sicily (CVE-118), or USS Badoeng Strait (CVE-116) in the summer of 1952.
During a night carrier landing attempt the aircraft in which I was a crewman went over the port side of the carrier and impacted the water.
All members of the crew evacuated the aircraft safely and we were picked up by the USS Bausell which was the plane guard destroyer during those aircraft operations.

My father was on the USS Agerholm.His rank CS3.1-7-49 to 4-23-49.
He served as Skipper of USS Chowanoc, ATF 100, and Skipper, USS Sioux, ATF 75 prior to serving on the USS Agerholm.

The Force arrived in Pearl Harbor on March 11th and remained until the 24th when the Ingraham and Sumner moved to Lahaina Roads, Maui and anchored there overnight, returning to Pearl Harbor the next day.
This was followed by daily operations out of Pearl Harbor with visits to Maui and Hilo Bay, Hawaii until returning to sea on May 1st with Task Force 58 and the USS Antietam (CV-36) and USS Shangri-La (CV-38).
Davy Jones was received onboard on the 6th with all due honor and respect and all pollywogs were initiated into the Realm of the Deep on the 7th.
