Alaska sailed for the Japanese home islands as part uf TG 58.5 on 10 February 1945, assigned the mission of screening the aircraft carriers Saratoga (CV-3) and Enterprise (CV-6) as they carried out night air strikes against Tokyo and its airfields.
Composed of Alaska, her sister ship Guam (CB-2), the heavy cruiser Pittsburgh (CA-72), the light cruiser Santa Fe (CL 60) and three destroyer divisions, TU 58.2.9 drew the duty of screening the damaged "Big Ben," as Franklin had been affectionately nicknamed by her crew.

 USN Ships--USS Alaska (CB-1)
USS Alaska, the first of the 27,500-ton Alaska class large cruisers, was built at Camden, New Jersey, and was commissioned in June 1944.
After shakedown training in Chesapeake Bay and in the Caribbean with USS Missouri (BB-63), she sailed for the Pacific in December 1944 and joined the fast carrier task forces at Ulithi two months later.
USS Alaska was decommissioned at Bayonne, New Jersey in February 1947, and remained there until sold for scrapping in June 1960.

The third Alaska (CB-1)--the first of a class of "large cruisers" designed as a compromise to achieve a fast cruiser with a relatively heavy main battery--was laid down on 17 December 1941 at Camden, N.J., by the New York Shipbuilding Corp.; launched on 15 August 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
Ernest Gruening, wife of the Governor of Alaska; and commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 17 June 1944, Captain P. Fischler in command.
Alaska supported the landing of Army occupation troops at Jinsen, and remained at that port until 26 September, on which date she sailed fro Tsingtao, China, making port he following day.

Warren Belt turn over leadership of the fleet ballistic missile submarine to Cmdr. Robert James III during a traditional change of command ceremony June 4.
Alaska is the only ship in the Pacific Fleet to have four consecutive retention honor roll listings, and they participated in the first Trident missile conversion and the first Trident II strategic deterrent patrol in the Pacific.
The dramatic improvements made in all areas as the ship transitioned from an extended shipyard period to one of the best operating ships in the fleet is a testament to the capabilities of Cmdr. Belt and each and every sailor of BLUE crew,” said Schuetz.

USS ALASKA (SSBN 732) is the seventh TRIDENT Class Nuclear Powered Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine and the fourth United States Navy ship to bear the name.
The second Alaska, built as a steam fishing vessel in 1881, was chartered by the Navy in September, 1918.

The 12 inch/50 guns were a new design and, because they were unique among wartime US ships, they were the most expensive heavy US guns of their period.
The initial Alaska design called for eight guns in two triple and one twin turret, and the design finally adopted (three triples) was justified in part because it would simplify turret production.
Armour was designed to assure immunity against the 12 inch 1140 lb shell between 18,000 and 24,000 yards at target angle of 60° - a requirement typical of prewar cruiser practice.
