  USS Alfred (1774) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Alfred was a man-of-war in the Continental Navy of the United States.
Sometime in December 1775, the Alfred became the first vessel to fly the Grand Union Flag (the precursor to the Stars and Stripes); the flag was hoisted by John Paul Jones.
Alfred was inactive through the summer for a number of reasons, but high on the list of her problems were want of funds and a shortage of men.

F earing that American commerce would soon be interrupted her owners were eager to export another cargo to England, so they again raced to load and provision her.
At the outset of the fray, fire from her cannon cut Alfred's tiller ropes, leaving Hopkins'flagship unable to maneuver or to pursue effectively.
She was purchased and taken into the Royal Navy as H. armed ship Alfred (20 guns) and was sold in 1782.

George C. Overton, saved himself, after the sinking of the USS Tecumseh at Mobile Bay, August 5, 1864, by swimming ashore to Fort Morgan; captured by the Confederates and sent to Andersonville, Georgia, August 21, 1864; this may be the same person listed in the next entry.

On March 9, 1778, in the Lesser Antilles; Alfred, some distance from Raleigh, was captured by the British ships HBMS Ariadne and HBMS Ceres.
Raleigh, unable to reach Alfred in time to assist her, continued north and returned to New England early in April 1778.

USS BIDDLE was the ninth and last ship in the BELKNAP - class of guided missile cruisers and the fourth ship in the Navy to bear the name.
USS BIDDLE and the USS RALEIGH (LPD 1) are slightly damaged when the BIDDLE strikes the moored RALEIGH while approaching a pier in Norfolk, Va.
In December 1775, Captain Biddle took command of the 14-gun brig ANDREW DORIA and joined the fleet commanded by Esek Hopkins in the expedition against New Providence.

 Revolutionary War Campaigns: Captain John Paul Jones of the Continental Navy
On November 1, 1777, he sailed in the sloop-of-war USS Ranger for France with dispatches for the American commissioners, announcing the surrender of Gen. John Burgoyne and asking that Jones should be supplied with a swift frigate for harassing the coasts of England.
A few days later, he surprised the garrisons of the 2 forts commanding the harbour of Whitehaven, a port with which he was familiar from boyhood, spiked the guns and made an unsuccessful attempt to fire the shipping.
His flagship, the USS Duras, a re-fitted East Indiaman, was re-named by him the USS Bonhomme Richard, as a compliment to Benjamin Franklin, whose "Poor Richard's Almanac" was then popular in France.

On December 3, the USS Alfred, USS Andrew USS Doria, USS Cabot, and USS Columbus.
On December 22, 1775, Esek Hopkins was appointed the naval commander-in-chief, and officers of the navy were commissioned (including First Lieutenant John Paul Jones).
With this small fleet, complemented by the USS Providence, and USS Wasp, Hopkins led the first major Naval action of the Continental Navy, in early March 1776.

From early 1775 British men-of-war, espeeia}ly His Majesty's Frigate Ro$e, preyed on Rhode Island shipping and annoyed the colony's coast.
While Providence was at home, Hopkins appointed Jones Commander of Alfred, a larger ship and the Commander in Chief's flagship on the expedition to the Bahamas.
She was destroyed by her crew, with other American vessels in the Penobseot River, 14 August 1779, to prevent her falling into the hands of the British.

In 1779, John Paul Jones took command of an old decaying merchant ship that was renamed the USS Bonhomme Richard (honoring Benjamin Franklin). It carried 42 relatively light guns, some of which were in rather poor condition.

The question of what to do with this unique piece of history has plagued Fairhaven since the cannon's arrival in 1775 from New London, Conn. -- the No. 1 one naval stronghold in America during the Revolutionary War.
The cannon was originally captured in battle in February 1774 when the ship USS Alfred, with John Paul Jones as a junior officer, attacked a British fort in Nassau.
Fort Phoenix received the Connecticut cannon and several from Boston but Capt. Nathaniel Pope took the cannon to where Union Wharf now stands when the British landed in New Bedford on Sept. 6.
