This SUMNER is the successor to the U.S.S. Sumner (DD-333) that was decommissioned in 1930.
SUMNER was the first of a class of destroyers larger and more heavily armed that her predecessors, being 376 feet in length, weighing 3,000 tons fully loaded and designed to engage larger Japanese TERUTSUKI class destroyers.
Allen M. Sumner, Capt. Sumner's widow of Montross, Va.; and commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on 26 January 1944, Commander Norman J. Sampson, in command.

Allen M. Sumner (DD-692) was laid down on 7 July 1943 at Kearny, N. J., by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co.; launched on 15 December 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
Allen M. Sumner remained at Ulithi until 19 November at which time she departed the atoll to join Task Group (TG) 38.4 at sea.
Allen M. Sumner spent the next nine days in San Pedro Bay undergoing upkeep and repairing the minor darnage that she had suffered in the action at Ormoc Bay.

The USS Mitchell was named for Ensign Albert E. Mitchell a naval aviator who was killed in action in June 1942.
Captain Allen M. Sumner was a killed in action saving the lives of his men without regard for his own safety.
Designed during the late 1940's and built during the 1950's the USS Jonas Ingram had the most modern weapons and crew conveniences available at the time, including air conditioning throughout the ship and more living space for the men than in earlier destroyers.

The Sumner class destroyer was the next evolutionary step from the Fletcher class and reflected the increasing need for Anti-Aircraft Warfare defense.
They shared the same power plants as their predecessor but had twin rudders and were slightly longer and wider in the beam.
They are often referred to as 'short-hulls' as the subsequent Gearing class DD's were essentially the same as the Sumner class except for a 14 foot extension inserted into the middle of the hull.

The USS Cooper was sunk on 3 Dec. 44 with the loss of 191 shipmates.
On Saturday 28 May 2005 a plaque will be place on her in rememberance of those brave souls.

The other ships that were at the school were th USS George (DE-697), USS Raby (DE-698), USS Marsh (DE-699), (the Marsh later went to Korea), and the USS Currier (DE-700).
It was the USS McMinville, but we didn't know when we served in it.
This is significant to me since I spent a couple of fantastic years on the USS Richard B. Anderson DD-786 and the sailors of this great ship have helped to make this monument possible.
