  USS Amberjack
Amberjack spotted a Japanese cruiser on the morning of 30 September and launched four torpedoes from her bow tubes.
On 8 February, Amberjack was ordered to move to the west side of Ganongga Island[?] and on 10 February, she was directed to keep south of latitude 7°30'S and to cover the traffic routes from Rabaul[?] and Buka[?] to Shortland Basin[?].
Amberjack won three battle stars for her World War II service, and was credited with sinking three ships, for a total of 28,600 tons while damaging two more ships for 14,000 tons damaged.

USS Amberjack (SS-522), a Balao-class submarine, was the second submarine of the United States Navy named for the amberjack, a of vigorous sport fish found in the western Atlantic from New England to Brazil.
On 2 September 1969, following another 25 months of operations along the east coast and in the West Indies, she embarked upon her last Charleston-based tour of duty in European waters during which she participated in another NATO exercise with units of the British, Canadian, and Dutch navies.
At the conclusion of the exercise, Amberjack visited a number of ports in northern Europe before returning to Charleston on 12 December 1969.

During World War II, he served as Damage Control Assistant, Chief Engineer, and Executive Officer of USS Trigger (SS-237), during which time she was one of the highest scoring submarines in the force.
Following the war, he commanded USS Amberjack (SS-522), USS Trigger (SS-564), and USS Triton (SSN-586), and served as naval aide to President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The second Amberjack (SS-522) was laid down on 8 February 1944 at the Boston Navy Yard,; launched on 15 December 1944 sponsored by Mrs.
In July of 1952, Amberjack was transferred to the newly established SubRon 12, though she remained based at Key West and her employment continued as before.
On 9 July 1970, Amberjack arrived in her new home port, Key West, her base for the remainder of her service in the American Navy.

I reported aboard the USS Tirante (SS-420) at Key West in late 1963 (made a Med run in 1966) and sailed aboard her until I 'swapped' to the USS Ronquil (SS-396) out of San Diego in 1966.
I served on USS Barb (SSN-596) and was the Sonar Chief on USS Richard B Russell (SSN-687).

This is a sequence of four pictures of Amberjack diving along side the pier in Key West.
There was a hurricane coming in and the Captain felt it was better than trying to ride it out in the shallow water of the Gulf of Mexico.

Built in 1942 for the U.S Navy and named USS Guest — DD 472, this vessel was transfered to the Brazilian navy in 1959 after four years of duty in the U.S Navy in the world war two.

Amberjack was the last diesel boat at Key West, and her leaving was indeed the end of an era.
Subsequent to that I was on the USS Skipjack (SSN 585) for nearly 4 years, and then the (PCU)USS Topeka (SSN 754), took a warrant commission and a set of orders to Guam and the USS Proteus (AS 19), and from there I retired.

The Confederate States Navy launched the CSS Hunley, a submersible hand-propelled craft with a crew of eight, all of whom perished with their only victim, the USS Housatonic.
The submarine force today consists both of attack submarines, fulfilling the traditional submarine role, and ballistic missile submarines, which provide an undersea platform for ballistic missiles.

On Wednesday, June 8, 2005, the attorney for the USS Liberty Veterans Association filed a report with the Department of Defense detailing the war crimes the Israelis committed during their June 8, 1967 attack on the USS Liberty.
Bob Casale, a plank owner of the USS Liberty has posted an album of pictures of the Liberty's commissioning, it's first cruise, including some pictures of the officers and chiefs, and some of the reunions.
The USS DAVIS (DD-937) was the first ship on the scene after the attack to assist the USS Liberty.

After completion, in January 1958, he was assigned to the commissioning crew of USS SARGO (SSN 583) at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA.
In August 1968, he was assigned to USS AMBERJACK (SS 522) in Charleston, SC.

We were on our way to barrier patrol duty between Iceland and Greenland listening for Russian Submarines.
