 Gallant Lady excerpt
The USS Archerfish (SS-311) didn't look any different than many of the other diesel-powered, Balao-class submarines that were being hastily assembled and launched in the Portsmouth Navy Yard during World War II.
Follow along as we track Archerfish from her birth in New Hampshire in 1943 until she died an explosive but noble death in 1968, still characteristically serving her country by doing whatever she was asked to do.
Told for the Archerfish crewmembers still alive as well as for those on "eternal patrol." Told for the thousands of submarine sailors who preceded them and for those who still ply the planet's seas on the "boomers" and "fast attacks," the nuclear boats.

Launched in May, 1943, Archerfish's first year of service in the Pacific was lackluster, with two skippers and only 2 sinkings to her credit.

As shooting time was near, one of the escort destroyers passed directly over Archerfish, and as soon as she passed, Enright came to periscope depth and fired six torpedoes.

She looked much like any other diesel-powered Balao-class submarine crafted in the 1940s, but the Archerfish, named for a fish that kills its victims with a lethal blast of water from below, won a unique, heroic place in military history and in the memories of her crew members.
Here is her story: from her assembly in New England and her dedication at the hand of Eleanor Roosevelt, to her service in World War II, when she broke the back of the Japanese Navy, and her critical role in the Cold War, crisscrossing the oceans for six years to foil Soviet naval intelligence.
In their own words, these men tell how, against all odds, they sent a Japanese aircraft carrier to the ocean floor…served in peacetime in the Navy’s only all bachelor crew…steered their ship into exotic ports all over the world…and welcomed B-girls, Japanese war veterans, royalty, Playboy bunnies, and a goat aboard ship, with equal hospitality.
