The first USS Argonaut (SM-1/SF-7/SS-166/APS-1) was laid down as V-4 on 1 May 1925 by the Portsmouth Navy Yard.
Admiral Chester Nimitz assigned Argonaut and Nautilus (SS-168) to transport and land marine commandos on Makin Island in the Gilbert Islands.
On the basis of the report given by the Army flier who witnessed the attack in which Argonaut perished, the ship was credited with having damaged one Japanese destroyer on her last patrol.

USS Fulton was involved in refitting submarines between their war patrols and acted as a tender to other types of ships.

 Bells Left Behind
The bells - from the submarines USS Wahoo (SS-238) and USS Argonaut (SS-166) - were two unique reminders of the dangers submariners faced during another era, that of the submarine war waged in the Pacific in World War II.
Argonaut and USS Nautilus (SS-168) took Carlson's Raiders to Makin Island in 1942, partly because they were our largest submarines - and they returned to a heroes' welcome at the submarine piers, not far from where the chapel would be built and dedicated in 1944.
One of those lost was the USS Robalo (SS-273), and her Commanding Officer, Manning Kimmell.

MC GROGAN'S US NAVY SS-166 USS ARGONAUT PATCH "LOST BOAT" SS-166 V-4 Argonaut Displacing 4,164 tons (submerged), USS V-4, later Argonaut (SS-1662), was both the largest submarine the Navy ever built before the advent of nuclear power and the only U.S. submarine specifically designed as a minelayer.
The Argonaut (SS-166), originally intended for a minelaying mission, was authorized in the FY1925 program and laid down in May 1925 as V-4.
Her configuration, and that of the two V-class boats that followed – USS V-5 and USS V-6 – resulted from an evolving strategic concept that increasingly emphasized the possibility of a naval war with Japan in the far western Pacific.

Records are not clear, but according to research, the USS GRAMPUS was assigned or selected to be commemorated by Washington D.C. Later, at the end of 1984 or early 1985, California agreed to also include the USS GRAMPUS, along with the USS ARGONAUT.
Because he felt we needed to honor those lost crews he started a fund raising campaign to place a memorial at the submarine torpedo memorial in San Leandro.
