The USS Arizona is best known for her catastrophic sinking, with the loss of 1,177 lives, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, the event that brought about U.S. involvement in World War II.
Arizona, one of the newest and most powerful American dreadnoughts, served as part of the honor escort convoying the President of the United States to Brest, France on December 13.
She participated in a succession of fleet problems (the annual maneuvers of the fleet that served as the culmination of the training year), ranging from the Caribbean to the waters off the west coast of Central America and the Canal Zone; from the West Indies to the waters between Hawaii and the west coast.

Operated by the National Park Service, the USS Arizona Memorial serves as a reminder of the tragic events of December 7, 1941, and of the proud battleship that rests beneath the waters of Pearl Harbor.
Arizona's burning superstructure and listing masts became one of the most-reproduced scenes of the Pacific war as the nation rallied to the cry, "Remember Pearl Harbor!" One of only two ships not refloated after the attack, Arizona was left a shattered hulk on Battleship Row.
It was there on December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack, that Arizona's magazines were pierced by a 1,760-lb bomb that shattered the battleship, instantly killing most of her crew and sinking the ship in 40 feet of water.

 U.S. World War II Battleships and Battlecruisers
USS Utah (BB 31) and USS Wyoming (BB 32) were both built as battleships but neither were used as such in WWII so they are excluded at this site.
USS Utah was converted to AG16 as a target/training ship in the early 1930's and at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor was mostly disarmed and much of the deck planked over.
(The partially sunk hull still remains there today.) USS Wyoming was also converted to a training ship (AG17) and was used as such until her decommissioning in 1947.
