Arnold J. Isbell-born on 22 September 1899 in Quimby, Iowa-entered the Naval Academy on 24 July 1917 and graduated on 3 June 1920 (a year ahead of schedule due to acceleration of midshipman training during World War I) with class 21A of the Class of 1921.
Arnold J. Isbell (DD-869) was laid down on 14 March 1945 at Staten Island N.Y., by the Bethlehem Steel Co.; launched on 6 August 1945; sponsored by Mrs.
Arnold J. Isbell remained in her role as a reserve training ship until 1 February 1974, when she was decommissioned and struck from the Navy list.

Arnold J. Isbell (DD-869) was laid down on 14 March 1945 at Staten Island N.Y., by the Bethlehem Steel Co. and launched on 6 August 1945, the day the US dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.
The Isbell spent almost her entire life in the Pacific fleet.
Author Don Sheppard was the Isbell's XO from 1970-71.

Captain Isbell was born on September 22, 1899 in Oto, Iowa.
Captain Isbell's duty from 1929 until 1940 when he was promoted to the rank of Commander was principally concerned with flying and ordnance.
In 1943 Captain Isbell took command of the USS Card, an escort carrier, for which duty he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for a notable record of German submarine sinkings in the Central Atlantic convoy routes during World War II.

In August, 1943, he reported to USS Halligan (DD-584) and was on board for its commissioning and during operations in the Atlantic and Pacific, including the Marshall Islands (occupation of Kwajalein, Majuro and Eniwetok atolls).
In July, 1950, he assumed command of USS Arnold J. Isbell (DD-869), a unit of the Pacific Fleet which was deployed in the Far East for eight months.
The citation states in part that on June 14, 1951, his ship went to the rescue of USS Thompson, which was under heavy fire from enemy shore batteries and had been his several times, and with 56 rounds, silenced the enemy batteries and prevented Thompson from suffering further damage.

Comments: I was an aircrewman with a VS squadron operating from either USS Sicily (CVE-118), or USS Badoeng Strait (CVE-116) in the summer of 1952.
During a night carrier landing attempt the aircraft in which I was a crewman went over the port side of the carrier and impacted the water.
All members of the crew evacuated the aircraft safely and we were picked up by the USS Bausell which was the plane guard destroyer during those aircraft operations.

Comments: I was recalled and served a tour in Korea from 1952 thru 1953 as MML2.Remember the shore patrol duty and the ship hitting a tidal wave where we lost several people.Would be interested to hear from anyone who might recall the events.
Comments: I was on the A J when it was commissioned in 1945 and then discharged in 1946.
I am doing my senior thesis on the USS Arnold J. Isabell and the action she saw during the Korean War.

After "A" school, I was assigned to the USS Kansas City (AOR-3), homeported in Long Beach, CA.
In 1991, I transferred to the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) as Command Chief, a position I held until I retired from the Reserves on 1 January 1996.
In addition to NAS Key West and USS Kitty Hawk, I also did active duty over the years aboard the USS Putnam (DD-757), USS Arnold J. Isbell (DD-869), USS Hamner (DD-718), and USS Tulare (LKA-112).
