USS Aspro (SS/AGSS-309), a Balao-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the aspro, a fish found abundantly in the upper RhĂ´ne River.
Aspro torpedoed a freighter on 4 March, and the subsequent explosion shook the submarine violently.
Aspro entered Sagami Wan and came within five to six miles of the Japanese mainland to retrieve the pilot.

The first Aspro (SS-309) was laid down on 27 December 1942 by the Portsmouth (N.H.) Navy Yard; launched on 7 April 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
Aspro arrived at Pearl Harbor on 18 October and immediately began preparations for her first war patrol which would take her to waters around Taiwan and Sakishima Gunto.
Aspro was recommissioned on 6 July 1951 and, for the next two years, operated out of San Diego, her new home port, and performed routine work along the west coast.

 USS Runner (SS-476) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Runner (SS/AGSS-476), a Tench-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the runner, an amberfish inhabiting subtropical waters.
Her keel was laid down on 10 July 1944 by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
The tanker and her two escorts escaped the spread of torpedoes fired at them, but Japanese minesweeper W-27 was splintered by three of Runner's torpedoes.

 USS Bowfin (SS-287)
USS Bowfin (SS-287) was a Balao-class submarine laid down by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard at Kittery, Maine on 23 July 1942, launched on 7 December, 1942 by Mrs.
The USS Bowfin was decommissioned on 12 February, 1947 and placed in reserve at New London in Connecticut until recommissioned on 27 July 1951.
She was decommissioned again on 22 April, 1954 and placed in reserve at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

I always thought that the boat(s) used were the Marlin or Mackerel - SS 204 and 205 which were apparently both assigned to the school at New London at the time the movie was made - probably 1942.
I was assigned temp duty to the ASR 9 - the USS Florikan.

Finally, in September 1944, he joined the crew of the sub USS Aspro (SS-309), a Balao class sub, as an Electrician’s Mate, and completed three war patrols in the Pacific.
During Aspro's seventh and final war patrol, which began 25 June 1945, she performed lifeguard duties, coming to the aid of pilots downed on missions over Japan.
Aspro's final war patrol ended on 13 August 1945, when she moored at Midway Island to commence a refit--it was here that news came of the Japanese capitulation.

They called us up and after their Trident tour they came here and looked out our periscope, all were happy campers again.
The first display case you see when entering the museum is a 6' scale model of the USS ASPRO SS-309, made by ex-WWII crew member of that boat.
Vice president is temporarily unfilled at this time due to past president being transferred from the area do to his business.
