Atherton reported for duty in conjunction with the outfitting of the destroyer Meredith (DD-434) at the Boston Navy Yard.
Atherton (DE-169) was launched laid down on 14 January 1943 at Newark, N.J., by the Federal Drydock and Shipbuilding Co.; launched on 27 May 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
Atherton left Norfolk on 11 December to escort a convoy bound for the Panama Canal but was back in Hampton Roads on 27 December.

The battleship USS Colorado (BB-45) is damaged by an explosion, the destroyer USS Ammen (DD-527) by a horizontal bomber and the submarine chaser SC-737 by grounding, all in the Okinawa area.

 Navy Senior Archivist Helps Solve 57 Year Old “USS Eagle 56” Mystery
An identical sister ship, USS Eagle 56 (PE-56), was lost due to a mysterious explosion April 23, 1945.
In June 2001, at a special ceremony aboard the museum ship USS Salem (CA 139) in Quincy, Mass., the Navy awarded the Purple Heart to the three survivors and next of kin of those lost.
As a postscript, U-853 was one of the last German U-boats to operate off the U.S. coast during World War II, and it was sunk with all hands by USS Atherton (DE 169) and USS Moberly (PF 63) south of New London, Conn., May 6, 1945.

 USS Moberly
The Coast Guard-manned frigate USS Moberly (ex-Scranton) was built by the Globe Shipbuilding Company of Superior, Wisconsin, and ferried down the Mississippi River to New Orleans and thence to Houston, Texas, where she arrived on September 5, 1944, where work on the frigate was completed.
Immediately prior to the end of the European War, on May 6, 1945, the Moberly, along with the USS Atherton (DE-169), contacted, attacked and destroyed a German submarine, the U-853, in the vicinity of Block Island, Rhode Island.
The DE dropped depth charges at 2028 and during the next 30 minutes fired two full spreads of hedgehogs.

Upon her return to Gibraltar, she got underway for New York City, arriving 30 November for overhaul.
After refresher training, Ericsson escorted a convoy to Oran from the east coast in April 1944, and while returning to Boston, on 5 May joined Atherton (DE-169) and Moberly (PF-63) in a submarine hunt off Block Island.
With other ships joining from time to time, and two airships helping to determine the final sinking, the three ships found and sank U-853.

When I arrived, Dick had brought a bottle of Captain Morgan Rum all the way from Fort Edward just for me. I was also able to gorge on all the chips and Doritos that my wife won't usually let me have at home.
We were extremely impressed and emotionally absorbed with his personal tales of WW II and how they related to the history of the ship.

During the Civil War the naval yard at Portsmouth, while in the hands of Confederate forces, repaired and converted the USS Merrimack into the CSS Virginia.
The first flight deck build on a ship belonged to the yard's USS Birmingham, and the US Navy's first aircraft carrier, the USS Langley was converted from the USS Jupiter in 1922.

John Ericsson, born 31 July 1803 in Vermland, Sweden, is best known for devising and building the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor.
A prolific inventor, Ericsson advanced maritime science in many ways, perfecting the screw propeller and other devices which played a significant part in advancing naval engineering.

July 26: Faced with its vessels becoming obsolete, Isthmian submits a new application to the Maritime Commission for a construction subsidy only, asking for 12 new C-3s with steam turbine propulsion with certain modifications.
