 USS Atlanta - Ships History
The fourth Atlanta (CL-104) was laid down on 25 January, 1943 at Camden, N.J. by the New York Shipbuilding Corp., and launched on 6 February 1944.
From 22 to 27 May, Atlanta served with the Fast Carrier Task Force operating south of Japan near Okinawa while its aircraft struck targets in the Ryukyus and on Kyushu to support forces fighting for Okinawa.
Her name was again struck from the Navy list on 1 April 1970, and the former light cruiser was sunk during an explosive test off San Clemente Island, Calif. on 1 October 1970.

USS Atlanta, a 10,000-ton Cleveland class light cruiser, was built at Camden, New Jersey, with her construction financed by War Bond sales in Atlanta, Georgia.
Atlanta first entered combat in late May, serving as an escort to aircraft carriers raiding enemy targets in the Ryukyu Islands and on Kyushu.
Meets with reporters from the two Atlanta, Georgia, newspapers, the "Journal" and the "Constitution", in March 1943, on the occasion of his visit to the city to climax a successful War Bond selling campaign to cover the cost of replacing the cruiser Atlanta (CL-51), sunk on 13 November 1942 off Guadalcanal.

USS Atlanta, first of a class of 6000-ton light cruisers, was built at Kearny, New Jersey.
Later in the month, she escorted Enterprise during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons and protected USS Saratoga after that carrier was damaged by a Japanese submarine torpedo.
USS Atlanta lies on her port side off Guadalcanal's Lunga Point, some five-hundred feet below the surface of Iron Bottom Sound.
