  USS Attu (CVE-102) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The USS Attu (CVE-102) was a Casablanca-class escort aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, named after Attu in the Aleutian Islands.
Attu was steaming in a fueling area south of the Japanese home islands when word of Japan’s capitulation arrived.
The escort carrier sailed to Norfolk, Virginia, via the Panama Canal and Jacksonville, Fla. Attu decommissioned at Norfolk on 8 June 1946, and her name was struck from the Navy list on 3 July 1946.

Attu was assigned the role of supplying replacement aircraft and pilots to the fast carrier task forces operating in the forward area.
The carrier sailed back to the west coast on 11 November and, on the 25th, began her participation in Operation "Magic Carpet." In this capacity, Attu made voyages to numerous points in the Pacific to shuttle troops back to the United States.
The escort carrier sailed to Norfolk, Va., via the Panama Canal and Jacksonville, Fla. Attu was decommissioned at Norfolk on 8 June 1946, and her name was struck from the Navy list on 3 July 1946.

The battleship USS Colorado (BB-45) is damaged by an explosion, the destroyer USS Ammen (DD-527) by a horizontal bomber and the submarine chaser SC-737 by grounding, all in the Okinawa area.

During World War II, Attu was invaded by Japanese forces in June 1942 and was recaptured by the Americans in May 1943.
She was laid down on 16 March 1944 at Vancouver, Wash., by the Kaiser Shipbuilding Co. under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 1139); launched on 27 May 1944; sponsored by Mrs.

Comments: I was assigned to the USS Albuquerque PF-7 right out of Radio school in April 1952.
As this was going on, the DD USS Perkins, I think, came steaming from the back side of an island where she had been hiding in order to locate the Koreans guns.

The aircraft climbed to 32,000 feet for an aerobatics exercise and was last seen spinning into the sea by a US Navy destroyer.
The aircraft is presumed to have been hit by flak on a bombing run and crashed into the sea from 200 feet.
The aircraft were returning from a strike at Chabai when they collided on final approach and crashed onto the runway.

The pulpit used in the chapel today was used at the Naval Academy from the turn of the century until early 1943, when it was placed at St. Nicholas.
Also, the 300-pound church bell was the ship's bell of the aircraft carrier USS Attu (CVE 10), which saw action at the invasion of Iwo Jima.
However, the most unique feature of the chapel, by far, is the chapel's crucifix, sculpted by the now famous Felix de Weldon, a Navy combat artist and a second class seaman stationed at Pax during World War II.
