  USS Augusta (CA-31) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Augusta (CA-31) (originally CL-31) was a Northampton-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, notable for service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II, and for her occasional use as a presidential flagship carrying both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman under wartime conditions.
Augusta was bombed at 0357 on 11 June, but escaped damage as the bomb exploded 800 yards (730 m) off her port beam.
Augusta returned to Norfolk on 10 April, and on 14 April, in accordance with orders from the Secretary of the Navy, half-masted her colors for a period of one month in honor of the late President Roosevelt.

The fourth Augusta (CL-31) was laid down on 2 July 1928 at Newport News Va., by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co.; launched on 1 February 1930; sponsored by Miss Evelyn McDaniel of Augusta, Ga.; and commissioned at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Va., on 30 January 1931, Capt. James O. Richardson in command.
Augusta remained in the yard at New York from 23 June to 2 July, after which time she resumed operations along the eastern seaboard, in waters off Hilton Head and Charleston, S. (4 to 5 July), Hampton Roads (6 to 7 July) before she returned to Newport on 8 July.

While many ships have been ahead of their time in a technological sense, USS Augusta is best remembered for her involvement in incidents that prefigured great events, especially the United States' war with Japan and the founding of the United Nations after World War II.
Augusta remained at Shanghai through the new year, when she carried survivors of USS Panay, sunk by Japanese aircraft on December 12, to the Philippines.
Augusta saw no combat until October of that year, when she sailed for French Morocco as flagship of Rear Admiral H. Kent Hewitt's Task Force 34 in Operation Torch; among her distinguished complement was Major General George S. Patton.

Churchill meets FDR aboard the USS Augusta (CA-31) at their 1941 secret meeting at Argentia Bay, Newfoundland, lasting August 9th through the 12th.
The Atlantic Charter was negotiated at the Atlantic Conference by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, aboard a warship anchored in a secure anchorage at Argentia, Newfoundland (located on Placentia Bay) and was issued as a joint declaration on August 14, 1941.
Roosevelt had travelled to Argentia aboard the heavy cruiser USS Augusta (CA-31) while Churchill made the journey across the Atlantic aboard the battleship HMS Prince of Wales.

In January, 1941, after boot camp, I was assigned to the heavy cruiser USS Augusta (CA-31).
I was reassigned December 14, 1941 to the light cruiser USS Detroit (CL-8) on which I stayed until WWII ended at Tokyo Bay, Japan September 2, 1945.
The USS Detroit was present for the ceremony.

The heavy cruiser, USS Augusta, with Commander Task Force 34, Rear Admiral H. Kent Hewitt, aboard, led U.S. naval forces assigned to make three expeditionary force landings on the Atlantic coast of French Morocco.
TORCH forces destined for the Moroccan invasion departed in late October 1942, from the U.S. Navy's main eastern sea base at Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia, from Casco Bay in Maine, and from other eastern U.S. ports, and would be joined at sea by forces deployed earlier to Bermuda.
Typical of the ships in convoy was the USS Joseph Hewes, the former passenger liner SS Excalibur, redesignated APA-50 by the U.S. Navy.

Nine months later she was recommissioned as USS Sailfish, serving through most of the war in the Pacific.
In August 1941, Tuscaloosa accompanied USS Augusta (CA-31) which carried FDR to Newfoundland for talks with Winston Churchill leading to the Atlantic Charter.

SOC Seagull is launched from USS Astoria (CA-34, a New Orleans Class Cruiser) in 1942.
Also, a very nice set of pictures is available at a site for the USS Augusta (CA-31), a heavy cruiser from the earlier Northhampton class with similar aviation capabilities.
The aviation capabilities of Wichita were similar to Tuscaloosa, except that like the Brooklyn class of light cruisers and the subsequent Baltimore class of heavy cruisers, aviation on Wichita was located aft, rather than amidships as on Tuscaloosa and other New Orleans Class heavy cruisers.

All battleships were assigned to the Atlantic Fleet and all armored cruisers and lighter cruisers were assigned to the newly created Pacific Fleet.
The first Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet was Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans, who assumed command on 1 January 1906 aboard his flagship the battleship USS MAINE (BB 10).

Though German naval forces were a significant threat during this high-level seaborne meeting, the British Admiralty sent U.S. Navy leaders "estimates" of U-boat locations that were extremely detailed and current.
