  USS Bang (SS-385) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Bang (SS-385) was a United States Navy Balao-class submarine, named after the bang, a type of sardine.
Bang arrived at Portsmouth Navy Yard 22 June 1945 and after repairs proceeded to New London, Connecticut where she went out of commission in reserve 12 February 1947.
Bang was converted to a GUPPY type submarine and recommissioned 4 October 1952.

BANG (SS-385) was laid down on 30 April 1943 at Kittery, Maine, by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; launched on 30 August; sponsored by Mrs.
BANG made a periscope attack and fired ten torpedoes at three overlapping targets, all of which the submarine claims to have sunk, although the postwar records do not confirm this claim.
BANG departed the area on 23 November and arrived at Pearl Harbor on 5 December for refit.

A tall, genial redhead, Ramage was born in Monroe Bridge, Massachusetts on 19 January 1909 and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1931.
Parche departed Pearl Harbor on her first war patrol in March 1944, teamed with USS Bang (SS-385) and USS Tinosa (SS-283) to form a "wolf pack" preying on Japanese shipping in the Luzon Strait, between Taiwan and the northern Philippines.
USS Parche (SS-384), a member of the mid-war USS Balao (SS-285) class, was built at the Portsmouth (New Hampshire) Navy Yard and launched on 24 July 1943.

 USN Ships--USS Bang (SS-385)
USS Bang, a 1526-ton Balao class submarine built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, was commissioned in December 1943.
Bang's second patrol was made in support of the June 1944 Saipan invasion and continued on to the Formosa area, where she attacked many Japanese ships but gained no confirmed sinkings.
USS Bang was transferred to Spain at the beginning of October 1972, a loan that was converted to a sale in November 1974.

USS Grampus (SS-207) was lost on 5 March 1943 with the loss of 72 officers and men when it was sunk in the Blackett Strait; Possibly in Vella Gulf, last contacts at 4 55S 152 30E.
USS Kete (SS-369) was lost on 20 March 1945 with the loss of 87 officers and men when it was sunk somewhere between 29 38N 130 02E and Midway.

On 8 April 1945, she reported her position to submarine USS Tigrone (SS 419) and when she did not acknowledge messages sent from Tigrone the next day, it was presumed that she had headed toward Luzon Strait.
When she failed to make a transmission, USS Bang (SS 385) was sent to make the search and rendezvous with Snook.
Although Bang arrived and rescued the downed aviators, she saw nothing of the missing submarine and on 16 May 1945 USS Snook, credited with sinking 17 enemy vessels in her two and one-half years of active service, was presumed lost after 8 April 1945, the victim of unknown causes.

After one day alongside USS HOLLAND (AS-3) in Apra Harbor, the submarine departed on 12 April for her patrol area off Bungo Suido.
USS GATO (SS-212) covered the east entrance and Atule the west.
On 4 July 1946, Atule headed for the frozen north as a member of Operation "Nanook." The purpose of this mission was to assist in the establishment of advanced weather stations in the Arctic regions and to aid in the planning and execution of more extensive naval operations in polar and sub-polar regions.

First boat was USS Sea Fox (SS-402) from 1956 to 1958, then on to USS K-3 (Bonita) where we served as an underway target for a live nuclear depth charge test in South Pacific.
Graduated from Sub School in Feb 1963 and I was assigned first to the USS Thresher, but in that time I was not a U.S.Citizen so I could not get a secret clearance and because of that I was assigned to the USS Spinax.

USS Lenawee (APA-195) had the best CO, he had tried to get into SS all during WWII, and helped me get orders to Sub School.

The USS Ramage is the first U.S. Navy warship named to honor the life and service of World War II hero Vice Admiral Lawson Paterson Ramage, USN, (1909-1990) Construction began on November 15, 1991.
The USS Ramage deployed as part of a Surface Strike Group on April 30, 2004 in support of the global war on terrorism.
The third Medal of Honor awarded to a submariner in World War II was earned by then-CDR Lawson P. "Red" Ramage for a blistering night surface action against a Japanese convoy south of Taiwan in July 1944.

At 0500, the RAKUYO MARU is torpedoed by LtCdr (later Vice Admiral) Eli T. Reich's USS SEALION and hit in the No. 1 hold and engine room.

Dad was also my instructor when I went through Sub School 1963.
