 USS Barb (SS-220) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Barb (SS-220), a Gato-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the barbus.
Barb's war operations spanned the period from 20 October 1942 until 2 August 1945, during which time she completed 12 war patrols.
Barb's fifth patrol terminated 1 July 1943 and she proceeded to the Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut, arriving 24 July.

As Commanding Officer of BARB, he established himself as one of the greatest submarine skippers, credited with the most tonnage sunk by a U.S. Skipper during World War II; seventeen ships including a carrier, raider-cruiser, and frigate.
