Barry was held in reserve commission until 15 November 1921 when she was placed in full commission and reported to the Atlantic Fleet.
Barry and USS Goff (DD-247) rescued survivors of USS Borie (DD-215) after she was fatally damaged 1 November while sinking the German submarine U-405 by ramming.
Barry received the Presidential Unit Citation as a unit of TG 21.14 and four battle stars for her actions in the Atlantic and Pacific during World War II.

Barry was assigned to the 1st Torpedo Flotilla, Coast Squadron, North Atlantic Fleet, and during the summer of 1903 participated in maneuvers off the New England coast.
Barry, ordered to investigate a soviet merchantman, proceeded to her station on the 9th and sighted the merchant ship that evening.
Barry sailed for her assignment on 10 November 1981, bound for Hamilton, Bermuda, on the first leg of her transit of the Atlantic.

Barry captured an armed British vessel when ammunition was scarce, and a supply ship when food was at a premium, then he came to Washington's aid when the leader was planning to cross the Delaware.
Barry was held in such high esteem that, after the Delaware crossing, and the subsequent victories at Trenton and Princeton, in which he served as an aide to Washington, Lord Howe made a flattering offer to Barry to desert the patriot cause.
Barry's victories at sea (beginning 7th April 1776) were many and important to the morale of the American people as well as to the successful prosecution of the war.

Although for a while it was rumored Barry might be disposed of and replaced by a newer ship, the latest unofficial information indicates she will be repaired and will remain as a museum at the Washington Navy Yard.
Barry was the only member of her class refitted with a bow-mounted sonar dome, resulting in a unique arrangement of her anchors.

The High Command was experimenting with methods of defending against the relentless kamikazi attacks by the Japanese pilots and it was decided to use the Barry as a decoy to attract the suicide pilots.
The LSM contained the remote controls for the Barry's pseudo weapons and Lipan was to tow the Barry to simulate an underway tincan.

During her Mediterranean tour that year, the BARRY’s crew helped rescue the crew of a plane from the AMERICA (CV-66), and early in 1978, shadowed the KIEV and other units of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet gathering intelligence.
The BARRY was decommissioned at Newport on 5 November 1982, and towed to the Inactive Ship Facility in Philadelphia five days later.

BARRY, the fourth ship in the United States Navy named after Captain Barry, is the second in the ARLEIGH BURKE - class of AEGIS guided missile destroyers and the first built by Ingalls Shipbuilding of Pascagoula, Mississippi.
USS BARRY's most recent Mediterranean Sea deployment was from February 2000 to August 2000.
Following the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, DC., on September 11, 2001, the commanding officer and the crew of USS BARRY requested the flag of the FDNY to be flown as battle ensign on their ship to commemorate the heroic work of the firemen in New York City.

Hi I served on the sister ship USS snyder DE 745 was moored at The Brokklyn Navy yard 1951 she was a tringing ship for the Naval reserve.Then went to Pensacolo to the Naval School of photography.
I was a Radioman Aboard the USS Loeser DE 680 from 52-55 and found from it's Newsletter that Mr.Ooesterreich was a Volunteer in the Slater restoration.I was very sorry to hear he had died.
USS Slater was open to visitors in her Albany port on Sunday, April 19.

Due to the inaccessibility of the drain from the intake plenum a cut must be made in the shell of the ship.
Our investigation determined that the stop collars can be replaced with the kingpost in-place with minor repairs vice rigging the kingpost on and off the ship, a complete teardown in the shop and a weight test at completion of repairs.
