USS Bataan (CVL-29), originally planned as USS Buffalo (CL-99) and also classified as CV-29, was an 11,000 ton Independence class light aircraft carrier which was commissioned in the United States Navy during World War II.
Bataan returned to the United States, arriving at New York 17 October 1945, and was assigned to "Magic Carpet" duty.
Bataan continued operating between Japan and Korea throughout the summer of 1952 carrying personnel and supplies to the fighting area and launching strikes against the enemy.

LHD 5 is named to honor the heroic defense of the Bataan Peninsula on the western side of Manila Bay in the Philippines during the early days of World War II.
More than 100 members of veterans groups associated with the defense of Bataan and the subsequent infamous "Death March," the battle of Corregidor and the aircraft carrier USS Bataan (CVL-29) were at the christening ceremony.

Bataan was the last American stronghold in the Pacific theater to fall until MacArthur fulfilled his famed prophecy, “I shall return,” by reconquering the Philippine Islands two-and-one-half years later.
The battle of Bataan and ensuing “Death March” are widely regarded as one of the greatest examples of allied courage, endurance and sacrifice in the history of military conflict.
The mission of BATAAN is to enable the Navy and Marine Corps team to accomplish a seamless transition “….from the sea” to the land battle, originally as the lead ship of an Amphibious Readiness Group (ARG) and now as the centerpiece of an Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG).

USS Bataan, an 11,000-ton Independence class small aircraft carrier built at Camden, New Jersey, was begun as the light cruiser Buffalo (CL-99).
During April-June 1944, Bataan took part in attacks on Japanese positions in New Guinea, the Caroline, Mariana and Bonin Islands and in the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
Bataan recommissioned in May 1950, and was soon involved in transporting aircraft to the Korean war zone.

The Bataan Death March was a war crime involving the forcible transfer of prisoners of war, with wide-ranging abuse and high fatalities, by Japanese forces in the Philippines, in 1942, during World War II.
Meanwhile, Allied forces elsewhere in the Philippines fought on, and the column of prisoners marching from Bataan was accidentally shelled by US guns defending Corregidor.
After the surrender of Japan in 1945, Homma was convicted by an Allied commission of war crimes, including the atrocities of the death march out of Bataan, and the atrocities at O'Donnell and Cabanatuan that followed, and executed on April 3, 1946 outside Manila.

Yes the Atomic bomb was a nightmare for them and caused a great loss of life but to the Americans they still had a naval base called Pearl and the thousands of sailors that died there due to their aggression burning in their minds.
She is there to mark the close of WWII as the USS Arizona marked the opening of WWII.
IMO the reason none of the major US carriers of the third fleet were in Tokyo Bay was a safety net just in case the Japanese did not honor the formal surrender the carriers would not be in any danger and a majority of their planes were flying in formation overhead of the Bay.

This series of 9 light carriers Independence (CVL 22), Princeton, Belleau Wood, Cowpens, Monterey, Langley, Cabot, Bantaan and San Jacinto was built upon the already completed hulls of Cleveland class light cruisers after the loss of four fleet carriers ind 1942.
Independence (CVL 22) was expended as an atomic bomb target ship at Bikini in 1946, and the rest were laid up in 1947.
USS Bataan (CVL-29), was reclassified as an aircraft transport (AVT-4) in May 1959, but was stricken from the Navy List in September of that year and sold for scrapping in May 1961.

The "old salts" were here on an annual reunion held by the sailors of the USS Bataan (CVL-29) that saw action in World War II and Korea.
The museum served cake and punch to the men of the Bataan outside the front door of the small museum.
In addition to the 100-plus members of the Bataan and their wives, who toured up here in three buses, were three sailors from HMS Glory, a British carrier that served with the Bataan during the Korean War in the early 1950s.
