		USS Bon Homme Richard (CV/A-31), the second United States Navy ship of that name, was named in honor of John Paul Jones' famous frigate, which he had named the French language equivalent of "Poor Richard," in honor of Benjamin Franklin's almanac of that name.

		On 19 May 1967, while deployed aboard USS Bon Homme Richard as part of CVW-21, LCDR Bobby C. Lee and Lt Phillip R. Wood became the first VF-24 pilots to shoot down MiG aircraft over North Vietnam.
		VF-24 and CVW-9 were reassigned to USS Ranger and deployed in July 1983 as part of Battle Group ECHO.
		In 1975, VF-24 made it's last F-8 Crusader cruise aboard USS Hancock and upon return to San Diego, transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat and received their first aircraft on 9 December 1975.

		USS Bon Homme Richard (CV-31) was commissioned November 26, 1944 with Captain A. Rule, Jr., in command.
		On June 6, 1957, two F8U Crusaders and two A3D Skywarriors flew non-stop from Bon Homme Richard off the California coast to USS Saratoga (CVA 60) of the east coast of Florida.
		The initial west coast deployment of a squadron equipped with the new Sidewinder missile was with Fighter Squadron 211, equipped with FJ-3s, aboard Bon Homme Richard in September 1956.
