Boxer returned to the Dominican Republic on April 27, 1965, sending her Marines ashore while the embarked HMM-264 began an airlift in which over 1,000 U.S. nationals were evacuated to the naval task force off shore as a revolt in the country threatened their safety.

The HMBS Boxer, commanded by Captain Blyth, was sailing off the coast of Portland, Maine on September 5, 1813, when she was met by the USS Enterprise, commanded by Lieutenant William Burrows.
However, she was captured by USS Kansas on May 15, 1864 then purchased by the U.S. Navy from the Boston Prize Court and commissioned into service as the "USS Boxer" on August 12, 1864.
The fifth USS Boxer, CV-21 was first laid down by Newport News Shipyards September 13, 1943, was launched on December 14, 1944 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. The ship was commissioned on April 16, 1945, and Captain D. Smith became the first officer to command her.

The USS Boxer Veterans Association was formed in 1986.
The association is open to the crew, squadron personnel, attached Marine Corps personnel and other military personnel having served aboard the USS Boxer CV/CVA/CVS-21/LPH-4/LHD-4.
