One ship of the United States Navy has been named USS Bridgeport, after the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut; a second was cancelled before completion.
The first Bridgeport (AD-10) was originally the German passenger ship SS Breslau, seized in World War I and used as a transport.
The second USS Bridgeport (CA-127) was to have been an Oregon City-class heavy cruiser.

USS S-49 (SS-160) was laid down on 22 October 1920 by the Lake Torpedo Boat Company at Bridgeport, Connecticut.
The S-boat was commissioned at Bridgeport, Connecticut, on 5 June 1922 with Lieutenant Ingram C. Sowell in command.
On 12 March, USS S-49 returned to the United States Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, Connecticut...whence she completed a run to the Portsmouth Navy Yard at Kittery, Maine; and, then, back to Connecticut...then transited to the Philadelphia Navy Yard at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with USS S-50, for inactivation.

 USN Ships--USS Bridgeport (ID # 3009, later AD-10)
USS Bridgeport, a 7175-ton (displacement) destroyer tender and repair ship, was built in Germany in 1901 as the commercial steamship Breslau.
Bridgeport assisted in the movement of smaller vessels to the Azores, and in August 1918 went to Brest, France, where she served for more than a year as a repair and supply ship.
USS Bridgeport was decommissioned in early November 1924 and remained in reserve for nearly two decades.

USS S-50 (SS-161) was laid down on 15 March 1920 by the Lake Torpedo Boat Company at Bridgeport, Connecticut.
During mid-July of 1925, USS S-50 returned to the submarine base at Groton, and, for the next two years, was primarily engaged in conducting experimental tests and performing exercises for the Submarine School at the submarine base at Groton.
USS S-50 (SS-161) was struck from the Navy List on 31 March 1931, and her hulk was scrapped the following fall.

Joseph Grogan was from Bridgeport, Connecticut, and died in December, 1863, aboard the USS Weehawken.
Thomas Addison Knowlton, USS Wabash, was born in Rockport, Massachusetts, and died at the age of 102, at Ashland, Massachusetts, on February 14, 1940.

 The Little Steamboat That Opened The Cracker Line
The Story of the USS Chattanooga, a "home-made" steamboat built by the Quartermaster Department in October 1863 to carry supplies to General Grant's starving army at Chattanooga, Tennessee.
On the 24 of October the advance reached Bridgeport, and on the 3d Hooker established headquarters at Stevenson, and Howard the headquarters of the Eleventh Corps at Bridgeport, then the limit of railroad travel, eight miles east of Stevenson.
At Bridgeport I found Captain Edwards, Assistant Quartermaster, from Detroit, preparing to build a steamboat to navigate the river, by mounting an engine, boiler, and stern-wheel on a flat bottomed scow, to be used in carrying and towing up supplies until the completion of the railroad.

Following commissioning at Bridgeport, Connecticut, USS S-49 remained, there, through July of 1922, and, in August of 1922, moved down to the United States Naval Submarine Base at New London/Groton, Connecticut...where the boat joined Submarine Division Zero - composed of units engaged in submarine research and development.
Reduced to a hulk (read "demilitarized") by that company in 1936, but not scrapped, the S-boat was sold to an organization that operated the submarine as an "attraction." The submarine visited many ports in the United States and was "inspected" by interested people who toured through that submersible when she was open to visitors.
During the Second World War, the former USS S-49 (SS-160) was reacquired by the United States Navy "as equipment" for use in experimental work at the United States Naval Mine Warfare Test Station at Solomons, Maryland...now known as the United States Naval Air

Comments: My Uncle William (Billy) Eliff, from Bridgeport Pennsylvania was on the USS BUCK DD420 when it was hit and sunk on Octber 9, 1943.
I first went to Korea in USS Buck (DD-761) then transferred to Toucan in March 52 and we were among the last to leave.
After the Armistise we were assigned along with 3 other minesweepers and a DE to patrol around Koji Do to prevent the Chinese or Russians from coming over and forceably taking the thousands of North Korean and Chinese POW's home against their will.

BRIDGEPORT - Bernard Koether was a 22-year old Navy officer in 1961 when he stood on the deck of the U.S.S. Glacier, overlooking a jagged expanse of bluish-gray ice off Antarctica.
With enough volunteers and money to complete the work, he said work on the mammoth vessel could be finished in three years.
While the notion of bringing an icebreaker to Bridgeport may strike some as fanciful, Koether points out that a number of people didn't think he and his organization would get as far as it has.

The Keel of the USS S-48 was laid down on 22 October 1920 by the Lake Torpedo Boat Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut and S-48 was launched on 26 February 1921.
On December 7th, during a dive off Penfield Reef, a manhole plate in one of the aft ballast tanks was left unsecured, and S-48 sank in 60 feet of water.
On 22 January 1946, her hulk was sold to the North American Smelting Co., in Philadelphia, PA for scrapping.

 Tedford Harris Cann, Ensign, United States Navy
In April 1918, Cann was commissioned as an Ensign in the Reserve Force, continuing to serve in USS May into July.
He spent the rest of World War I as an officer in USS Noma (SP-131) and apparently left the service shortly after the conflict's end.

A brief shakedown cruise was taken to Bridgeport, Connecticut in early November and then Half Moon departed for a 21 day Search and Rescue Standby Assignment in Bermuda.
