 USS Buchanan (DD-484) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Buchanan (DD-484), a Gleaves-class destroyer, was the 2nd ship of the United States Navy to be named for Franklin Buchanan, who was an officer in the U.S. Navy that became an admiral in the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War.
Buchanan (DD-484) was launched 22 November 1941 by Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Kearny, New Jersey; sponsored by Miss Hildreth Meiere, great-granddaughter of Admiral Buchanan; and commissioned 21 March 1942, Lieutenant Commander R. Wilson in command.
Buchanan was recommissioned 11 December 1948 at Charleston and underwent shakedown and refresher training with a nucleus Turkish crew aboard.

BUCHANAN was assigned duties as AAW Picket Station and on 30 April the ship was enroute to Diego Garcia.
On 20 May, BUCHANAN was back on station in the North Arabian Sea and on 27 May the ship was enroute to the Persian Gulf for a port visit in the state of Bahrain.
BUCHANAN was underway again from 25 - 29 September for four days of local operations and on 7 - 11 October the ship was in San Francisco Bay for San Francisco's Fleet Week.

Buchanan transited the Panama Canal in July 1919 to join the Pacific Fleet, serving along the West Coast until she was placed out of commission in June 1922.
Buchanan was decommissioned in April 1937, as newer destroyers entered the Fleet, but was brought back to active duty at the end of September 1939 after the outbreak of World War II in Europe caused the United States to enlarge the Navy for neutrality enforcement purposes.
USS Buchanan was named in honor of Admiral Franklin Buchanan (1800-1874), who was an important figure in the United States and Confederate States Navies.

USS Higbee DD 806 became the first U.S. naval vessel attacked by enemy MiG-17s, one of which dropped a bomb on the destroyer's stern, wounding four sailors.
USS Sterett stood by, as Higbee fought her fires, completed her turn and proceeded out of the area, still with her rudder inoperative.
The USS Higbee (DD-806) was back in Tonkin action minus her aft gunmount, but with her structural damages repaired, thanks to fast work by the Ship Repair Facility at Subic Bay, Philippines.

The San Francisco and the destroyer USS Buchanan were both hit, with almost 30 deaths and 50 wounded in a battle which lasted minutes.
In early 1945, orders came for the U.S.S. Spangenberg DE 223 and other ships of Task Force 66 to report for duty under the British Admiralty for anti-submarine patrol and convoy escort support group work in and south of the Irish Sea, where sinkings by German submarines were numerous.
A submarine, the USS Croaker, is scheduled to arrive Thursday afternoon and be berthed beside the Spangenberg.

USS Buchanan, a 1630-ton Gleaves class destroyer, was built at Kearny, New Jersey.
Following a west coast overhaul, Buchanan took part in the invasion of the Palaus in September-October 1944 and in carrier operations against enemy targets in the Philippines, Formosa and South China Sea areas in December 1944 and January 1945.
Buchanan returned to the United States in October 1945 and soon steamed around to the east coast.

The destroyer HMS Campbeltown (formerly the 1919 decommissioned USS Buchanan) had 24 Mark VII depth-charges (4 1/4 tons) cemented below decks behind the forward gun support.
The Campbeltown with 18 smaller ships sailed into port where she was rammed directly into the Normandie dry dock gates.
