''Cachalot'' cleared San Diego 16 June 1937, bound for New London, Connecticut, and duty in experimental torpedo firing for the Newport Torpedo Station, and sound training for the New London Submarine School until 26 October 1937 when she began a lengthy overhaul at New York Navy Yard.
A year later she sailed for participation in a fleet problem, torpedo practice and sound training in the Caribbean Sea and off the Canal Zone, and on 16 June 1939, reported at Pearl Harbor for duty with the Submarine Force and the Scouting Force.

USS Bowfin - Submarines in Pearl Harbor 7th Dec.
Bernard Clarey, a lieutenant on 7 December 1941 and executive officer of the submarine USS Dolphin, is a survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack.
USS Dolphin's duty crew had manned all our machine guns and small arms and men were shooting at the enemy planes as they passed about 400 yards astern of our position at the pier.
Admiral Clarey was largely responsible for saving USS Bowfin from being scrapped or sunk as a target, for bringing her back to Pearl Harbor, and for her eventual restoration.

 Dolphin/Cachalot Class
The Cachalot (V8, C1) and the Cuttlefish (V9, C2) were further attempts to produce a smaller, lighter submarine for use in the Pacific.
One notable innovation in the Cachalot class was the extensive use of welding, particularly in the pressure hull and fuel tanks.
The Cachalot class were too small to be truly successful in the Pacific and after three unsuccessful patrols each they were turned over to training duties.

 Science Fair Projects - V-boats
They were not a ship class in the usual sense of a series of nearly-identical ships built from the same design, but because no other boats were being built during that time, the term "V-boats" is used to include these five classes of submarines.
Originally called USS V-1 through V-9 (SS-163 through SS-171), the nine submarines were renamed in 1931 as Barracuda, Bass, Bonita, Argonaut, Narwhal, Nautilus, Dolphin, Cachalot, and Cuttlefish, respectively.
Moreover, Cachalot and Cuttlefish served as the first test beds for the Mark I torpedo data computer that revolutionized underwater fire control in the mid-1930s.

USS Reuben James (DD-245), a post-World War I four-stack Clemson-class destroyer, was the first United States Navy ship sunk by hostile action in World War II and the first named for Boatswain's Mate Reuben James (c.1776—1838), who distinguished himself fighting in the Barbary Wars.
Some have argued that the deliberate attack on the United States gunboat USS Panay in 1937 on a river in China by the Japanese in the Panay incident might qualify.
One could argue that the sinking of the USS Reuben James by the German U-boat U-552 on October 31, 1941 might be considered the first American losses of World War II.

Ireland Information Guide , Irish, Counties, Facts, Statistics, Tourism, Culture, How
In the early 1910s, only a dozen years after USS Holland (SS-1) inaugurated the Navy's undersea force, naval strategists had already begun to wish for submarines that could operate in closer collaboration with the surface fleet than the Navy's existing classes, which had been designed primarily for coastal defense.
These notional "fleet" submarines would necessarily be larger and better armed, but primarily, they would need a surface speed of some 21 knots to be able to maneuver with the battleships and cruisers of the line.
Endurance, sea-keeping, increased torpedo capacity, and large deck guns were emphasized at the cost of high speed; and originally, a small scouting seaplane was to be carried in a water-tight hangar abaft the conning tower.

Displacing 4,164 tons (submerged), USS V-4, later Argonaut (SS-1662), was both the largest submarine the Navy ever built before the advent of nuclear power and the only U.S. submarine specifically designed as a minelayer.
Then, at Pearl Harbor – having never laid a mine in anger – her mine-laying gear was stripped out to facilitate conversion to a troop-carrying submarine, and in that guise, she participated in the commando assault on Japanese-held Makin Atoll by Carlson’s Raiders in August 1942.
The last and smallest submarines of the V-class were USS Cachalot (formerly V-8, SS-170) and USS Cuttlefish (formerly V-9, SS-171), launched in late 1933.
