USS Caiman SS 323 was attempting to penetrate the destroyer screen and gain a firing position on the Yorktown.
Caiman was at periscope depth and started to head for a deeper depth, but before she was able to gain sufficient depth, the rudder of the Moore struck the aft position of Caiman’s sail, causing severe damage to several masts and antenna’s.
After the collision USS Moore went to Sasebo for repairs and the USS Caiman went to Yokosuka for her repairs.

Caiman was decommissioned, struck from the Naval Register, and transferred (sold), 30 June 1972, under terms of the Security Assistance Program, to Turkey.

Pausing at Saipan to put ashore her severely ill commanding officer and embark his relief, the submarine pushed on to the South China Sea, where she combined offensive patrol with lifeguard duty to rescue aviators downed in air strikes on enemy-held territory.
Of Caiman's four war patrols, the last was designated "successful." She received two battle stars for service in World War II.

The SS Quartette was underway with a course set for of the Osumi Straits, south of the Island of Kyushu, Japan.
After several unsuccessful attempts to re-float the SS Quartette using engine maneuvers, the starboard lifeboat was lowered into the water and the entire crew of 36 men abandoned the Quartette on the morning of December 22 and were taken to Midway Island.

 USS Pampanito - The Sixth War Patrol
On the night of March 23, the wolf-pack was joined by a fourth member, USS Caiman (SS-323).
Pampanito rendezvoused with the new member of the pack a few miles east of the small island of Pulau Redang, and Lt. Commander William Bush, Perspective Commanding Officer (PCO) aboard Pampanito, was transferred to her.
On March 31, she exchanged recognition signals with USS Snook (SS-279), which was lost with all hands a few days later.

The history of the USS Caiman (SS-323) spans from its launching in 1944 to June of 1972.
While being chased by USS Samuel N. Moore (DD-747) which was acting as a screen for the USS Yorktown (CVS-10), the rudder of the Moore struck the after portion of Caiman's sail, causing severe damage to several masts and antenna’s.
The USS Caiman (SS-323) was decommmissioned and transfered to the Turkish Navy on June 3, 1972 and renamed the TCG Dumlupinar (S-325).

From Cabezon he went to USS CAIMAN (SS 323) for five years followed by duty aboard USS CHIVA (SS 341).
The master chief then served as COB on USS DOGFISH (SS 350) and USS BERGALL (SSN 667) before serving his final tour as command master chief for Submarine School.
