 BB-43 Tennessee Class
The USS TENNESSEE and USS CALIFORNIA BB-44 were the first US Navy battleships that did not have the casement gun positions mounted in hull, thus giving these ships a much cleaner appearance and reducing wetness forward.
Following that disaster, the sunken California was out of the war for over two years, but the relatively lightly-damaged Tennessee was back in service by early 1942.
California, which needed extensive repair of her Pearl Harbor damage, was finished in early 1944.

At 1015 the order to abandon ship was cancelled, flames from the water having cleared the ship and battle stations topside were manned and a large number of men returned from the beach to resume work.
The conduct of all California officers and men during the attack and subsequent fire was excellent and cool and they performed their duties in the manner fitting the best traditions of the Naval Service.
Prior to the air raid by the Japanese Air Forces on December 7, 1941, the U.S.S. California was berthed at Fox-Three, starboard side to with boiler #1 in use for auxiliary purposes.
