USS Cape Esperance (CVE-88) (name changed from Tananek Bay on 6 November 1943) was launched 3 March 1944 by Kaiser Co., Inc., Vancouver, Washington, under a Maritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs.
Continuing to operate from Ulithi and Guam through January, Cape Esperance carried fresh aircraft to the far-ranging TF 38 for its strikes on Japanese air bases on Formosa and the China coast.
This was the first of a series of such voyages in which she brought to the western Pacific a large number of the aircraft which roared over Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Japanese home islands in the massive carrier raids of the war's last months.

She made similar voyages until decommissioned and placed in reserve at Bremerton, Wash., 22 August 1946.
During the next 9 years, she cruised widely in the Pacific, delivering aircraft to Japan for use in the Korean conflict, supporting atomic tests at Eniwetok, and making two voyages to bring aircraft to the Royal Thai Air Force at Bangkok.

VF-11 SunDowner F6F-5 Hellcat "Ginger-29" on the USS Hornet 1944/1945
They headed out to go aboard the USS Wasp but it was sunk before they got there so they were sent to Guadalcanal.
The fighters were sent to Fighter One with the Marines (VMF 224) and the bombers and torpedo planes to Henderson Field to augment the Navy Squadrons there.

On 22 September, during a Dawn Alert, the Thorn was struck by a stray 40 mm projectile, courtesy of the USS Savo Island (CVE-77).
She assisted the USS Cape Esperance (CVE-88) during the 18 December “monster” typhoon.
She was ultimately sunk by aircraft from the USS Saratoga (CV-60) on 22 August 1974, in the Atlantic, approximately 75 east of Jacksonville, FL.
