Carl Vinson (November 18, 1883 – June 1, 1981) was a Democratic United States Congressman from Georgia who served for over fifty years in the U.S. House.
In 1909, at the age of 25, Vinson was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives and served as Speaker Pro Tempore by 1911.
During Vinson's tenure in the U.S. House, Vinson was a champion for national defense and especially the U.S. Navy.

 USS Carl Vinson visit to Lisbon
The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) arrived July 20 at the port city of Lisbon for a four-day stopover, making its final port call of an almost seven-month around-the-world deployment.
The USS Carl Vinson was commissioned in March 1982 and bears the name of Congressman Carl Vinson, the first person in the history of the United States to witness a launching in his honor (March 1980).
The stop in Lisbon is the final one on Vinson’s current voyage to its homeport in Norfolk, Va. Over 5,000 Sailors and Marines from the aircraft carrier took advantage of the Lisbon port call for some much-anticipated rest and relaxation among the city’s historical sights and recreational opportunities.

On July 23, 2001, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and the fast-combat support ship USS Sacramento left Bremerton for what was supposed to be a routine six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf.
On Oct. 7, the Carl Vinson launched the first attacks against Afghanistan in retaliation for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, DC.
The Vinson launched more attacks and was on Station in the North Arabian Sea longer than any other carrier before it and its carrier group departed for home on Dec. 18.
