Cassin sailed on maneuvers and patrol in the Pacific, cruising from February to April 1941 to Samoa, Australia, and Fiji.
Cassin was in drydock with Downes (DD-375) and Pennsylvania (BB-38) at Pearl Harbor during the attack on 7 December 1941.
Cassin steamed northeast of Luzon during the Leyte landings, and when the landings had been successfully launched, was dispatched with her group to refuel and replenish at Ulithi.

USS Cassin Young was launched on September 12, 1943, and was commissioned on December 31, 1943.
USS Cassin Young is named after Captain Cassin Young who was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
USS Cassin Young participated extensively in the Okinawa campaign, where she was struck twice by Kamikaze attacks, including the last Kamikaze hit of World War II.

USS CASSIN was laid down on October 1, 1934 and launched almost four hundred days later.
By the end of the attack, CASSIN was aflame from stem to stern, with torpedo air flasks, warheads, and ammunition beginning to "cook off." Depth charges, still in their stern racks, seemed likely to go next.
USS CASSIN was refloated on February 18, 1942 and moved to the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard for dismantling.

The first USS Cassin (DD-43) was the lead ship of her class of destroyers in the United States Navy during World War I.
Cassin was launched 20 May 1913 by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine; sponsored by Miss H. Carusi; commissioned 9 August 1913, Lieutenant Commander H. Laning in command; and reported to the Atlantic Torpedo Flotilla.
Cassin's war service received a well-deserved honor on 12 and 13 December 1918, when she was chosen as one of the escort for George Washington, carrying President Woodrow Wilson into Brest, France, for his attendance at the Versailles Peace Conference.

Cassin Young arrived at Pearl Harbor 19 March 1944 to complete her training before sailing on to Manus where she joined the massive carrier striking force TF 58.
Between 29 August and 2 October 1944, Cassin Young guarded the carriers of TG 38.3 as strikes were flown from their decks to hit targets on Palau, Mindanao, and Luzon in support of the assault on the Palaus, steppingstone to the Philippines.
Cassin Young cleared Okinawa 8 August for repairs at San Pedro, Calif. Here she was decommissioned and placed in reserve 28 May 1946.

One bomb penetrated her hull and detonated on the floor of the drydock; fragments from this bomb pierced fuel tanks and started a severe fire.
A second bomb hit Cassin amidships while her crew was abandoning ship, and she was quickly reduced to an inferno.
Totally destroyed, her surviving machinery was salvaged and fitted into a new hull, and the rebuilt Cassin rejoined the fleet in 1943.

Born in Philadelphia, 16 February 1783, Stephen Cassin entered the Navy as a midshipman in 1800, and served in Philadelphia in the West Indies during the latter part of the war with France.
Cassin was in drydock with Downes (DD-375) and Pennsylvania (BB-35) at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941.
With the same force which had struck at Marcus, Cassin sailed on to join TG 38.1 on 16 October, as the carriers of that group prepared the air strikes designed to neutralize the Japanese airfields in the Manila area prior to the assault landings on Leyte.

When blown overboard by the blast of the forward magazine explosion of the USS Arizona, to which the USS Vestal was moored, he swam back to his ship.
The entire forward part of the USS Arizona was a blazing inferno with oil afire on the water between the 2 ships; as a result of several bomb hits, the USS Vestal was afire in several places, was settling and taking on a list.
Cassin Young was born in Washington, D.C., on 6 March 1894.

While the LCS 64 was recovering USS BUSH sailors in the in final hours of April 6, 1945, The LCS 87 was removing the last of the USS COLHOUN officers and crew just before the COLHOUN was abandoned.
She retired with 44 survivors of the USS BUSH and one Japanese pilot (who had been hidden in an empty 20 MM locker for his own protection).
CASSIN YOUNG received the Navy Unit Commendation for her fine efforts on the radar picket line at Okinawa.

The original painting of the USS LaVallette was featured in special exhibits at the Charlestown Navy Yard Museum in 1983 and 1985, where the USS Constitution is now berthed and open to the public as a museum.
Ironically, the U.S.S. La Vallette’s WWll sister ship, USS Cassin Young (DD-793), is also a floating museum and historic landmark berthed at the Charlestown Navy Yard, next to the USS Constitution.
The original ship's bell was recently installed on the quarterdeck of the USS Hornet Museum, in California, and is used for ceremonies honoring veterans and Naval history.

Cassin died on August 29, 1857 in Washington, D.C. Cassin (TBD-43)(DD-43, July 17, 1920)(CG-1, August 30, 1924-June 5, 1933), was built by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine and commissioned on August 9, 1913.
Operations along the east coast on neutrality patrol and drills and surveillance patrol in the Caribbean were Cassin's employment until April 1917, when she was prepared for overseas deployment.

My basic references were Jeff Herne's The kit used was Blue Water Navy's (now Yankee Modelworks kit) USS Johnston Fletcher Class destroyer.
Since I wanted to model a deatroyer using one of the distruptive camouflage measures, I elected to model the USS Cassin Young--especially since there are quite a few references and photos of the Young.
My basic reference was J. Scott Harmon's "U.S.S. Cassin Young (DD-793)" book.

Here is another USS Salt Lake City sailor that was part of the cadre from the SLC that put the USS Cassin Young in commission on Dec. 31, 1943.
Jim Marrs is from the USS Cassin Young, DD793.
He served on one of the pre-war heavy cruisers, the USS Northampton, CA26, which operated with the Salt lake City a lot so he has a great feeling for the old Swayback Maru.
