  Naval History/USS Chester CA-27
The second Chester (CA-27) was launched 3 July 1929 by New York Shipbuilding Co., Camden, NJ., sponsored by Miss J. T Blain, commissioned 24 June 1930, Captain A. Fairfield in command; and reported to the Atlantic Fleet.
On 25 September 1935 Chester embarked the Secretary of War and his party for a voyage to the Philippines in connection with the inauguration of the President of the Philippines Commonwealth on 16 November.
Chester remained on the west coast for fleet exercises and training cruises to Hawaiian and Alaskan waters from 1937 except for a cruise to the east coast for exercises and overhaul (23 September 1940-21 January 1941).

Chester sortied 29 August with TG 12.5 for the bombardment of Wake Island (3 September), then arrived at (World War II (February 1944); American infantry landed and captured a Japanese stronghold) Eniwetok 6 September.

Chester William Nimitz (February 24, 1885 – February 20, 1966) was the Commander in Chief of Pacific Forces for the United States and Allied forces during World War II.
Chester William Nimitz, son of Chester Bernhard and Anna (Henke) Nimitz, was born in Fredericksburg, Texas.
Chester Nimitz also never held the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, as he was appointed a full Lieutenant after three years of service as an Ensign.

She was at sea when Japan began the Pacific War with their 7 December 1941 suprise attack on Pearl Harbor and operated in the Hawaiian area during the weeks that followed that raid.
Overhauled on the west coast during the Summer of 1942, Chester was next assigned to take part in the Guadalcanal campaign, but had only spent about a month in the area when she was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on 20 October and had to return to the U.S. for extensive repairs.

He then commanded USS Decatur and was courts-martialed for grounding her, an obstacle in his career which he overcame.
He had one year in command of the Atlantic Submarine Flotilla before coming ashore in 1913 for duty in connection with building the diesel engines for the tanker USS Maumee at Groton, Conn. In that same year, he was sent to Germany and Belgium to study engines at their Diesel Plants.
In 1933 he was assigned to his first large ship command, the heavy cruiser USS Augusta which served mostly as flagship of the Asiatic Fleet.

After the war was settled, Ensign Moffett went on to serve on the USS Baltimore and the USS Monongahela.
The USS Chester was in the thick of action, and CDR Moffett made every shot count from his three and five-inch guns.
As he left to take command of the USS Mississippi, and later, to serve as Director of Naval Aviation for a record 12 years, Captain Moffett gave credit to the numerous and almost unbelievable accomplishments that were made under his watch.

In November 1941, when the men left the Chester for the work detail, Helm said, the officer of the deck, who was responsible for noting which sailors were on the ship, had neglected to list the 13 members of the work detail.
Helm said he has long referred to the Chester's Pearl Harbor boat crews as the "Lucky 13." None of them was killed or injured during the attack.

This kit represents the USS Chester a unit of the Northampton Class.
She is modeled in her 1945 appearance after refits drastically reduced her bridge and superstructure to make up for the weight of the numerous anti aircraft guns that were added during the war.
Corsair Armada now makes a much improved sister ship, the Louisville, so it is still possible to build a USS Chester with a little modifacations.

When he was discharged from active duty in 1957 at the rank of FTGC, he was an instructor at the U. Navy Receiving Station in Washington, D.C. In 1959, we moved back to Palacios.
He and Nathan served aboard the U.S.S. Chester at the same time during the war years.

 USS Nimitz (CVN 68)
USS NIMITZ is the first ship in the NIMITZ - class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and the first ship in the Navy named after Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz.
One sailor is killed when a S-3 aircraft explodes, and another sailor who suffered burns to over 90% of his body later dies after being medically evacuated to Germany.
It is not known if the plane had to abort its effort to land and circle the ship before returning for a landing.
