The USS Cincinnati, a nuclear submarine mothballed at the end of the Cold War, probably won't end up as an educational tourist attraction on the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky riverfront.
Submarine Cincinnati Discovery Center, the organization that organized four years ago to try to bring the decommissioned sub it was named after, will continue to try to convince Navy officials to change their minds, said Joseph Jaap, the former Navy officer and Cincinnati layer who founded the effort.
Jaap's group is determined to bring the USS Cincinnati here and is agreeable to docking it on either the Ohio or Kentucky sides of the river.

After graduation from the Naval Academy in 1901, he served successively in the USS EAGLE, converted gunboat, engaged in the survey of Cienfuegos, Cuba; in the USS CINCINNATI, a protected cruiser employed in the Asiatic Fleet during the Russo-Japanese War; and in the USS ILLINOIS, flagship of the European Squadron.

When the USS S-4 was sunk off Provincetown, Massachusetts, in December 1927, he was assigned temporary duty in command of the Salvage Force that raised that submarine.

A group trying to bring the USS Cincinnati nuclear submarine to the Queen City's riverfront as the centerpiece of a new museum has gained at least 14 more months to save the vessel from the scrap yard.
The USS Cincinnati museum would have hands-on activities, overnight programs for children and a place for business and other groups to hold meetings.
Having the USS Cincinnati as part of a museum will also "be a good opportunity to bring technology to life," said R. Thomas Schram, SubCincy's executive director.

The Submarine Cincinnati Museum Foundation has been working for the past three years to get control of the vessel, now mothballed in Seattle, bring it here and open it as a museum and tourist attraction.
Henry, who said he's been pursuing the idea of bringing the Cincinnati to Northern Kentucky for two years, said the ship would be a nice complement to other tourist attractions in the area, including the aquarium, the International Peace Bell in Newport, Newport on the Levee, the Kentucky Speedway and Paramount's Kings Island.
Joseph Jaap, founder of the submarine foundation, said it's "no secret that Kentucky has shown interest in the USS Cincinnati since the beginning of the process." But determining which side of the river the ship is moored on is a secondary consideration at this point, he said.
