Matthew Perry obtained a midshipman's commission in the Navy in 1809, and was initially assigned to USS Revenge, which was under the command of his elder brother.
After the war he served on various vessels in the Mediterranean and Africa (notably aboard USS Cyane during its patrol off Liberia in 1819-1820), sent to suppress piracy and the slave trade in the West indies.
Perry commanded USS Shark from 1821-1825, and from 1826-1827 acted as fleet captain for Commodore Rodgers.

The second USS Cyane was a sloop in the United States Navy during the Mexican-American War.
Between 9 October 1851 and 24 June 1852 Cyane sailed in the Home Squadron, rejoining it 10 October 1852 to cruise constantly on the Atlantic coast and in the Caribbean from Nova Scotia to Aspinwall for the protection of the lives and property of American citizens.
In August 1858 Cyane stood out for the Pacific, and except for necessary overhauls, was constantly employed on the coasts of North and South America until decommissioned and placed in ordinary at Mare Island Navy Yard 20 September 1871.

The Royal Navy frigate, HMS Cyane, is one of only two wooden vessels known to have been built by John Bass, the Lympstone shipbuilder (the other being the Royal Navy gunbrig HMS Urgent).

There are a considerable number of accounts on the WWW which make reference to the ship HMS Cyane, in connection with her capture, 20 February 1815, along with HMS Levant by the USS Constitution during the War of 1812 (actually just after peace had been agreed because of the slowness of communications at the time!).

The second Cyane, a sloop, was launched 2 December 1837 by Boston Navy Yard.
On 7 July 1946 her commanding officer, Captain W. Mervine, led a detachment of Marines and sailors from Commodore Sloat's squadron ashore at Monterey, Calif., hoisting the American flag at the Customs House and claiming possession of the city and all of upper California.
They were followed shortly by the Fremont volunteers and Cyane's detachment returned aboard to sail for San Blas where a landing party destroyed a Mexican battery 2 September.
